Learn to Train Your Hunting Dog

Sun, March 11, 2018

The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA) is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to foster, promote, and improve the versatile hunting dog breeds in North America; to conserve game by using well trained reliable hunting dogs before and after the shot; and to aid in the prevention of cruelty to animals by discouraging non selective and uncontrolled breeding, which produces unwanted and uncared for dogs.  Our goal is to acquaint hunters, sporting dog enthusiasts, and any interested person with the proper humane training methods.

The Spoon River Chapter of NAVHDA serves central and southern Illinois. Our members are a variety of ages and we have a very energetic, active membership that is always willing to lend a helping hand. Our main goal during training days is to teach handlers how to train and handle a versatile hunting dog. We have many knowledgeable members on hand and try to keep the group informed between training and meeting days by e-mailing, phone calls, or blogging on our site, and also get together between scheduled training days. Any breed is welcome to train/learn with us but only those recognized by NAVHDA can test.

Our chapter offers so many things for the hunting dog enthusiast.  $40 a year gets you access to excellent private training grounds, a variety of game birds, top notch training equipment, excellent experienced advice, paid guiding opportunities, volunteer hunting and outdoor show events, discounts on hunting dog equipment, and a chance to meet new hunting friends.  We are a fully functioning 501c3 charity because of our volunteering in the hunting education and guiding community.  Spoon River members have been involved over the years in the planning, hosting, guiding, and education of many for various private and publicly-run hunting events.  Spoon River has worked with many conservation-related organizations in the past, including National Wild Turkey Federation’s Wheelin’ Sportsmen program, Pheasants Forever, and Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to name a few.  Averaging 3-4 events a year, an average year finds our members taking part in outdoors shows and guiding various youth upland and waterfowl hunts. The Spoon River Chapter is a family oriented club. We always welcome families and youngsters in training and testing sessions. What a great way to start a family activity, and meet a lot of new friends.

If you are not a member of Spoon River NAVHDA yet, and would like to become one, please go to our website and fill out the new member application and/or contact one of our officers listed there: You and your dog will be GLAD you did!
