The Smallmouth Report

Fri, May 16, 2014

Not a lot to report.  Last Saturday I did get out on the Vermilion.  River was in wonderful shape and for the first time in 2014, I was able to wet wade…...............yippee.  I am not a big fan of waders.  Sure, I wear them, but only when I have to.  When wet wading season arrives, I am ecstatic.  And, when wet wading season ends in the fall, I am not a happy camper.

I solely fished on Saturday with the fly rod.  Took a 7 weight and started with a blockhead popper.  This was the first day of the season that I have even tried a topwater.  I caught a couple of smallies and a handful of rock bass - nothing like topwater bassin’ with regular rods or the fly rod.  I only waded about a 1/4 mile and caught 5 smallies.  Poppers and a new streamer called the K-Zoo shad were both productive.  I got out around 9:00 and quit at noon.  If I knew what was in store weather wise, I would have fished all day.

Mother nature really has messed up the local rivers.  Rain, rain, and more rain this week.  I had to reschedule two guide trips for this upcoming weekend.  Hopefully, the high water has not messed up what was shaping up to be a great year for the spawn…...........we will see.

We need a dry week…...............

AS ALWAYS…..............HAIL TO THE SMALLIE

I feel your pain with all the rain and falling temps. Rivers are swollen and nearly unfishable. On a side note, if the temps jump a little this weekend don’t forget about the spot I took you to last year at this time for hybrids. It is about to bust open at the seems and will provide good action until the water levels drop. I’ll give you a ring as soon as it breaks.
