Stingy Smallmouths and Willing Pike

Wed, October 20, 2010

I had my last guide trip of the year this past Sunday.  I took long-time client Don Taylor on a float trip.  Same stretch of river where, just one week prior, a client caught 25 smallies.  Boy what a difference a week makes.  Don could only muster five smallies on the whole trip.  The bass were very lethargic and basically not feeding.  Even when he did get a bite on plastics, it was very subtle, and often the fish would hit once and then go away

But, even with the slow smallie bite, we did have one highlight.  As soon as we put the canoe in the water, I tied on a Megabass Prop Darter and told Don that the pike have really taking a liking to this bait.  We only made it about 100 yards from our put-in bridge when this bad boy struck.  What a battle and what a happy client.

Don did raise one more pike on the trip, but he pulled a little early and the pike missed the bait and would not come back for any other offerings.  It is with dissapointment that my 2010 guiding season is over.  We had some outstanding trips and I was lucky to fish with some outstanding folks.  Thanks to all of them.

AS ALWAYS…..........................HAIL TO THE SMALLIE

Are the Smallies putting on their pre-winter feedbag yet Jonn? Caught a a couple 10” to 12” fish the other day when it was gloomy and 60 degrees, but the water is so low over my way. Nice Pike!
