First Open Water Trip of 2014

Fri, February 21, 2014

Had the chance last Sunday to get out for the first time and fish some water that was not frozen.  My good buddy Eric invited me out to chase a little winter bronze.  Wow!  What a feeling to get back out and actually cast and work a bait without having to jig up and down through an ice hole.  The river was in great shape and the air temps. were down-right balmy.  While we did not catch any fish, we had a great time getting out and shaking off the rust.

Hopefully, real spring is not too far off…..............................

Here are some shots that Eric took while we were fishing.  Eric is quite the photographer.

After that great day on Sunday, it was back to the vise as I prepare jigs for Elmwood.  The Tinley Park show was great as I sold about 200 swim jigs along with some float n fly jigs.  If you are coming to Elmwood, make sure you at least stop by the booth and say hi.  I will have over 200 swim jigs ready to go for the show.  In addition, I will be doing a seminar at 11:00.  I have to admit that I am not real sure right now what my topic will be for the seminar.  I have given so many seminars that it is tough sometimes to come up with a new topic.  Anyone out there got any ideas on what they may want to hear about river smallies???  All ideas are good ideas…............thanks for the help and input.

While I will probably not make show due to work, how bout cold water tactics in spring? I was telling Esox how horrible I do in March smallie fishing. I don’t know if the fish are there in my spots or non-existant moving up and down the creeks. Whats a good lure for March smallie fishing?
