A Weekend Full of Smallies

Wed, October 01, 2014

This past weekend was a full smallmouth bass weekend.  Started out on Saturday with a guide trip with Ken Grumet.  Ken has been coming with me on trips for years.  He is a great guy and angler.  Ken and I did a float trip.  The river was in perfect shape and the weather was incredible.  The smallies did not disappoint.  After a slow start the first hour or two, the bass started to feed.  At the end of the 8 hour trip, Ken had 30 smallies landed.  Highlight of the trip was Ken’s personal best - 18.5 inches:

Caught on a buzzbait.  Of course, it was an exciting battle.  I never get used to those big river smallies….....they still get me excited.  So excited that you can see that the picture above is not one of my best photos.  I was so excited for Ken that I did not take into effect where the sun was located and the fact that my lens was a little dirty.  Luckily, Ken had a camera also.

Ken caught fish on a buzzbait, hula grub, and the KVD 1.5 crankbait.

Then on Sunday I traveled up to fish with my buddy Jim.  We got the Coosa kayaks out and did an early morning float.  Once again, everything was right - weather and river conditions.  Unfortunately, the fish had other ideas.  Catching was pretty slow.  I caught one and Jim caught three.  I lost a GIANT smallie right at the boat.  Trying to forget it…..........

Here are a couple of pics.

My guiding season is wrapping up for 2014.  It was a great year as numbers were up for clients and we caught many more larger fish than we did in 2013.  I will still accept guide trips through October provided clients have waders.

My thoughts are now turning to my pursuit of another Muskie on the fly.  Planning to hit the water on Saturday…..............cross your fingers for me.

Jonn, Tough for smallies around here and on the WI River due to all the flooding. Good to see you’re still after ‘em in the small streams.
