Shootin' Whitetails

Reflections on 2011

It doesn’t seem like that long ago that I was sitting at my desk contemplating 2010; now another year will be passing. Last year at this time, I was just getting started blogging on HO and now over a year has passed. I have shared with HO readers many of my outdoor interests including, hunting, birding, fishing, and of course all things whitetail. Here are some of my favorite shots of the year.

The year started off well with a visit with Gretchen Steele in Southern Illinois and a day at the World Shooting & Recreational Complex in Sparta chasing short eared owls. Thanks to Gretchen’s guiding skills, I was able to photograph many of these beautiful birds.

Next came shed hunting season with many hours logged in the field. I didn’t have a banner year, but managed finds from three deer I had photographed, including the shed from old Drop Tine.

3

Spring brought about a rekindling of my interest in birding. It started with the American White Pelicans that decided to make a stopover at Lake Springfield.

4

Next to come were the waves of migrating birds that included my new found favorite species, Warblers.

5

Later in the spring brought about the birth of wildlife’s youngsters.

Then it was whitetail time again, with antlers growing; it was time to document their growth over the summer. A few nice bucks were caught in velvet, but the biggest bucks stayed hidden until fall.

8

The dog days of summer ended and autumn brought about increased whitetail buck activity and a return of migrating warblers.

With the year coming to a close, it will soon again be time to visit the timber in search of sheds. Now a full year has passed with me blogging at Heartland Outdoors. What will next year bring? Of course there will more whitetails. I would like to keep this blog interesting, so let me know what ideas you readers have or would like to see in 2012.

Great pics as always.  Impressed with you taking on the warblers, that bunch can give you a headache.
