Forget Sheds

Well, that’s what it looked like on Tuesday afternoon when I shot this sequence. I spotted this eight point buck visiting scrapes. He made his way down the edge of a field freshening at least three different scrapes.

The buck then spent time chasing and scent checking does. I was surprised to witness this behavior so late in the season. I’m also still seeing lots of bucks with both sides of their antlers still attached. As soon as the rut winds down I’ll let everyone know when it’s time to start looking for sheds.

I thought the rut was going on Monday nite.  I saw a deer at 7 pm run down my neighbor’s gravel lane.  Stopped on the road to look and then it ran alongside his shed adjacent to the road and was followed by a buck.

Crazy is right!!!!I think the deers timing is ALITTLE off!!!!

Ha, I bet that was interesting to see. Great pics! That goes to show, you never know what you’ll see in the timber. It might be a buck to doe ratio thing, usually in high populated areas you’ll see continued activity like this. You have to wonder-maybe we don’t see more activity like this later or earlier in the season because it’s to hot/to cold for us to want to get out as often, so we miss a lot. Hard not to focus on the rut though when the bucks are running wild and then get burned out after you’ve hunted hard for a month : )

Could have, or was there a yearling in the group? That may have been it also, coming in late because of being born late.

After looking better, there is one in the 5th picture. But who knows for sure besides the big guy above.

As always Jim- stunning images - and FYI- Willie says ” See there.. that’s why I haven’t found any sheds yet. Pay attention to Jim HE knows!” smile

the rut never stops till the horns are down-“And I’ve had breeders tell me that doesn’t always stop them”- we see breeding here into April, but there is a big jump in Does/fawns in heat during febuary-that’s normal-Once on opening day turkey season, we had a 5 1/2 year old coming walking by the turkey tent with both sides on and 5 shed bucks following behind him-no wonder I couldn’t find his Horns!

Them are some awesome pics my friend! But I guess deer are kinda like me I only like to rut one month out of the year too!! Don’t you guys…. hmmm

Thats why I have pictures of a fawn with spots on November 17th.

Tater, I do not come into rut until AFTER bow season…LIFES TOO SHORT:)

My Wife told me the rut was still on friday night, right after she hit one of two huge bucks running across the road with her jeep. Thankfully she was taking it easy in the snow and was unharmed, cant say the same about the jeep…
Not sure I would like her to take up bowhunting as she seems to attract deer, this is her 3rd deer/vehicle collision and she catches bigger fish than me.

Awesome photos Jim, very strange year for deer.

Mohican, after reading that first part I sure thought you were heading a different direction!

We used to raise deer on a Christmas tree farm.  It was great for visitors.  We had a deer named Bell and she was over 10 years old.  She sired many a fawn and then one spring after she turned 10 she had a hard time with the birth.  We decided to pen her up for the next breeding season in a small pen to keep her from breeding.  She was fed well.  We did not let her out until late Jan and guess what. She had another one.  The pen was small enough to prevent a running start for a buck over the 8 footer so I think she was bred after we released her in Jan . She did not have that fawn until August.
