Acorns and Scrapes

Wed, October 20, 2010

What I’ve heard from most everyone the last few weeks is that it’s definitely a bumper crop year for acorns. The deer are still hitting the acorns pretty hard in my area and sticking pretty tight in the timber too. This small buck and some does were intently feeding on them the other night and I was able to get some good pictures of them. There was also a decent buck feeding on acorns.  I wasn’t quick enough to catch a shot before I spooked him. Bucks are still visiting scrapes on field edges during shooting light, but the bigger ones I had been seeing are remaining hidden in the woods. Activity should continue to increase in the upcoming weeks as the weather cools and the rut approaches.

Jim, great pictures again.  Especially the ones of that 6.  “Sticking pretty tight in the timber.”  That describes my property perfectly this year.  Every picture/video I’m getting this year is several hours after dark sets in.  Somehow I have the feeling we are going to see a strong and visible rut this year.
