We need some snow and cold

Wed, December 28, 2011

OK, this is getting ridiculous. Here it is almost January and we still have open water.

Canada geese all over Illinois are still content to graze on grass and loaf in yards and ballparks.

And any plans of ice fishing are on hold indefinitely.

Yep. We need some cold. And snow. Hey, it’s winter, let’s get some winter weather.

I spent parts of Monday and Tuesday in Peoria County hoping to get a shot at some geese. And we saw geese, including big flocks of specklebellies on Tuesday.

But those birds wouldn’t work and the numerous groups of Canada geese we had hoped to hunt were all content to sit around doing nothing more than grazing.

It has made for a frustrating portion of the season. But there’s still time in the Central Zone. We’ve got until Jan. 31. And birds are starting to arrive. In addition to the new birds we saw, I’ve heard reports of geese arriving in decent numbers around Jacksonville, Bloomington and Plainfield.

So maybe if we can finally get some winter weather, we can start seeing cooperative geese.

And maybe we can get out on the ice. My buddy Chef Todd is going crazy waiting for the hard water to arrive.

All we can do is wait.

I hope we get some winter weather too Jeff- Maybe like the last wk of Febuary- for about 5 days- and then that’s it! HeeHee! “I hate winter”-
My wife has a brand new fancy Ice fishen pole my buddy bought her, just sitting here-and today she’s headed to town for some 125 grn 30-06 coyote shells, so she’s hoping for cold and snow like you!

Yea pretty rediculous, i goose hunted today and it was almost 50 in NW IL!  The thing that really sucks is our goose season is over Jan 7th!  Way too early!  We should have done the same as the southerners and taken the 2 wk break from the geese to extend the season.

I won’t whine here.. I’ve been whining since November about the lack of birds down here.. it’s an oddball year to say the least.. and I just keep hoping that tomorrow will be the day I wake up and find that a big mess of new birds have arrived.. and Lord knows I’ve been looking for them all over hell half acres.. when I compared photos and field notes from this week last year ..darn near made want to cry…

Back in late November my buddy and I rushed around to get a plow mount fabbed up for his skid steer, and I got all my ice fishing gear out and ready to go, so for those that want hardwater and snow, sorry.  I did purchase a new bass combo from basspro over the Christmas weekend, so in my anxiousness to use it, I’m sure the ice and snow will come.  I like the snow and ice, if it would just stay about 30 with no wind all daylong that would be great.

Well it seems a lot of new geese made it to my neck of the woods.  A buddy and i shot our limit.  The bonus was, the first goose i shot today was wearing my first band!!!  Even cooler, my buddies dog retrieved his 1st goose!  In the past, he would only retrieve ducks, and was reluctant with the geese, but he retrieved one off the 1st double we had!  Great day on the river!!
