The Rig is legal in parts of Illinois

Mon, January 09, 2012

alabama rig horiz

Go buy all the Alabama Rigs you want folks!

The newest bass-fishing sensation is indeed legal in some Illinois lakes. That’s contrary to what I posted yesterday (early in the morning after dinner with Capt. Dale Florek of Noble Charters).

I was under the mistaken impression that The Rig was not legal at all in Illinois because of laws limiting anglers to two hooks or lures per rod. But here is the definitive ruling from Dan Stephenson of the DNR’s fisheries division.

“The Alabama rig IS legal on some bodies of water in the state. Most bodies no, but some are OK. We have a regulation that allows for no more that 2 poles with no more than 2 hooks or lures per pole. On those lakes the Alabama rig with all 5 lures is illegal. On those lakes the angler could still fish the Alabama rig but would have to use wire cutters on 3 of the hooks creating 3 “dummies” and 2 with hooks. Or they could take off 3 of the lures replacing them with blades/spoons to attract the fish. Again, there would be only 2 hooks and 3 non-functional “lures.”

“We have other lakes that do not have the 2 pole and line with no more than 2 hooks or lures per pole regulation such as the Corp or Engineers reservoirs – Shelbyville,  Carlyle and Rend. Lake of Egypt, Kinkaid Lake, the Mississippi river between IL and MO the Ohio River except for Smithland pool.  All private waters are OK with the Alabama rig.

“The angler needs to check either our regulation booklet or the ifishillinois.org site and look under Site Specific Regulations. If it says” 2 pole and line only” then the Alabama rig is illegal there unless the rig is modified as I stated above but creating “dummy” lures. If the lake doesn’t not have a “2 pole and line only” reg. the rig is legal.

“The Fisheries Division administrators are going to discuss this further at a meeting later this month.

“BTW – I just got off the phone with a manufacturer creating the Alabama rig for muskies not just bass, so the rig is coming faster all the time.”

That’s a very good clarification. Thanks Dan.

Comments

My first Alabama rig was waiting for me at the front door tonight.  Only took about 4 weeks, which isn’t to long considering everyone who is crazy about bass, pro angler, or anyone who has seen it wants one.  The thing looks awesome.  Unfortunatley, I fish a 2 hook per line, but it will still look like a bait ball coming through the water.

Just an FYI- Gander Mountain has the “Picasso School-E-Rig”  which is the same thing as the Alabama rig, about $10 cheaper than the Alabama rig.

They are most effective on big stripers. I think it’s ok to use them for meat hunters. True bass fishermen cannot possibly stoop so low as to use one. Closest thing to trot lining.
