When I got outside this morning, a few snow geese passed overhead.
Then more.
Then more.
Funny thing was, after they left I could still hear geese. They sounded close. So I packed up the camera and headed out. Just outside of Elmwood I found them. Thousands. How many? No idea.

I do know it was an impressive way to spend 45 minutes this morning, watching birds circle and land, circle and land. No wonder these things can clear a field out in rapid fashion.
And the same scene is being repeated all over central Illinois today. Big flocks are here. For now. Earlier than normal. Most years we can expect the snows to come through in the last week of February through the first week of March. This year seems early.
And impressive.

We had a similar swarm over our water Sunday January 29th. A real assortment. Lesser, greater and Giant Canadas, specks, snows, something I suspect might have been Ross’ geese and a half-dozen swans! A real potpouuri.
We had fun taking four big Canadas and watching the snows do their “tornado, set, tornado, set” thing all afternoon.
Probably the last time in my life I will be overheated and hunting sitting on a stool on the edge of the timber on a January 29th!!!

Awesome. I’d bet there are 30,000-40,000 in the 2nd picture.

Call ‘em sky carp, call ‘em a problem, call ‘em whatever you like… but you have to admit, watching them is an awe inspiring thing.. there’s just something about laying out in a field while they tornado in on top of me that takes my breath away .....
