Low water, some ducks for youth opener

Sat, October 23, 2010

Water was low, rain was falling and a few ducks were flying for Saturday’s youth season opener in the Central Zone.

Youngsters hunted today and can take back to the marsh Sunday for the annual youth hunt.

The Friends of Rice Lake group organized an event at Rice Lake and Banner Marsh that was well attended according to Adam Jaegle. “Every kid got a prize and we had more than enough food,” he said.

That made up for the fact that not every kid got a duck.

Some did, though. Actually, Jaegle said he saw more birds than expected given that it was during a thunderstorm.

Despite the rain, water levels remain frustratingly low. The next few days with 50 percent chance of rain need to come true to make things easier for Saturday’s season opener.
