Crappie biting on Rend Lake

Sun, October 24, 2010

rend lake Sunday

Well, we woke up this morning with very few businesses to visit. Most everything closes down in southern Illinois on a Sunday, so delivering magazines wasn’t an option.

But there is one thing that doesn’t stop on a Sunday. Fishing. Despite gusty winds of up to 30 mph, there were plenty of boats out on Rend Lake today.

Some were competing in a local crappie tournament. Some, like us, were just hoping to catch fish and pass some time on a gorgeous morning.

And high on my list of people I’d like to spend a morning fishing with is guide Todd Gessner, who is pictured above with Chef Todd (left) and a few of the crappie we caught. A recent inductee to the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame, Gessner was his usual good host.

Wind kept us off some prime spots, but we still managed to keep busy fishing stakebeds in 3-6 feet of water. The bite was not exactly red-hot, but wind made it tough to hold the boat. Minnows far outperformed jigs. And fish were biting pretty light.

This has been a very good year at Rend, though, with bigger fish becoming more prevalent thanks to the unique limit. Anglers are limited to 25 fish and only 10 of those can top 10 inches. Fish have been bigger in recent years, as a result,

Things are going well enough that Gessner predicts someone is going to catch a 3-pounder soon. Unfortunately, it wasn’t us today.

But we had a good time. Then we enjoyed a fantastic Sunday brunch at Gibby’s On the Green at Seasons Resort. Food was so good the Chef and I had to head straight to naptime. Ah what an enjoyable Sunday.

Anybody looking for a similar good time can call Gessner at 618-513-0520..
