The best part of this weekend was having Cam deciding he wanted his own tackle box and then going to Bass Pro to get it. I told Cam he didn’t need to spend his own money but he insisted. That was cool. After a long look at the new KVD box, or should I say bag, he settled on a less expensive camo bag. He then picked out a few lures, which I was doing too. We headed to checkout where he broke out his own money. He was thrilled as was I.
Monday couldn’t come quick enough. When we headed out the door it was 21 degrees. By the time we got on the water it was all of 29. And did I mention the wind? It was already blowing 10 or better. So I was still bundling up, sharpening hooks, checking drags when Cam threw his first cast. And he hooks up! After a short battle we have a 33 incher in the boat. That was fun.

Does Cam look like he was ready for the cold? At least this warmed us up for a minute. I got a little one about 20 minutes later and it looked like it was gonna be quite a day. And then the reality of muskie fishing set in. That means it was a long time till the next bite. And the wind picked up. We spent the rest of the morning battling the wind and being cold. How cold were we? At noon we headed back to the car to eat lunch there.
After lunch we decided to move to the other side since there it is more wind protected. This turned out to be a good idea. Not at first. We spent another 2 hours without a bite. Then about two o’clock I set the hook and handed the rod to Cam. He landed a nice 30 incher. This made him a little unhappy since he was ahead of me in fish early and then tied most of the day. Now he was behind. He kept casting and in that type of cold that wasn’t easy. Then I set the hook again. This time he battled a nice 37 incher to the boat. We were both excited. He wanted to learn how to grab it by the gill the way I do. So I explained it and he tried. You can see by the picture he was having some trouble.

The wind was blowing pretty hard still and it was getting colder at this point. At least the crowd was thinning out. Anyone thinking about fishing out there for the next couple months better be ready to deal with lots of boats. We started debating leaving. As we talked I told Cam we should hang in for a while as many times one fish will lead to another. He pointed out our 6 hour fishless span earlier in the day. That was a good point and I started slowly towards the ramp. I was interupted by a strike. When I leaned back I could tell it was a better fish and told Cam to get the net. It was a great battle with a number of long runs and then dives under the boat, Cam, who was more calm than I was, slipped the net under what would turn out to be a 40 1/2 inch ski. What a great way to end the day. While those fish are out there, they don’t show up too often.

This is shaping up to be quite a year.

The result of people wanting their “5 minutes of fame” and advertising on the internet just like this Pete.

Thad,
There are too many muskie nuts in the world. Don’t be one of them.

Thanks for sharing Pete, sounds like a very good day on the water for you and Cam and being I haven’t had the time to do so I appreciate you sharing your trip… As we all learn to harvest wisely with a lot of species being catch and release we can protect our resources and perhaps even catch the same fish more than once. I have exerienced the thrill of landing a fish that obviously had been hooked recently and yeah I let her go for someone else to have the same experience. There is enough to go around if we treat it as the recource it is.

Thanks enjycreation. I appreciate hearing from people like you. I certainly feel the sting of comments like wanting my 5 minutes of fame. I’m not sure why guys do that. I’ve meet Thad and like him. Still I know he got publicity in the Bloomington Pantagraph just last week about Spring Lake. And Richardson metions him a number of times a year. He also posts pics about Spring Lake on Larrys Fishing Hole. It seems like advertising on the interent to me. So why go on Jeffs site and my blog and make a crack?
Anyhow. I can finish by saying this: After something like this comes up I get a few calls and emails that think its pretty funny that I get scolded for giving up too much information. Those who know me consider me pretty tight lipped.

Hey Pete, thanks for all the info, now I know without a doubt that if I go to BPS and buy some lures and look at a KVD bag but eventually get a camo one I can catch all the musky…..no all the fish in this lake. Everyone needs a pace to go to talk about there fishing trips, and even brag a little about there kids sucess and
There own. I do on a different site. I enjoy reading your blog as it brings back the memorries of past fishing trips with my niece to the Hennepin canal for bluegill. Opps gave away a little to much there. If what you wrote is advertisment your a great salesman for taking a kid fishing with you.

Thanks Bowfisher, I appreciate the support. Jeff asked me about joining his group and I accepted. I was hesitant. I wasn’t sure anyone really wanted to hear about my adventures. It came up that it would be a good way to get my name out there. Originally I was going to wait a few more years to start a guide service. Then, figuring it would take quite some time to build up a clientel I decided why not start now. That was early last year. I could be going at it much harder but I don’t mind if it takes awhile for guys to find me. For those who do, I’ll make it worth their while. If Jeff thinks my stuff isn’t interesting enough or that people don’t want to hear it, I’ll be gone in a heartbeat. That said, I hope guys enjoy it.

Keep at it! Love reading your posts but rarely comment. Not sure what the “5 min” comment is all about, doesn’t make sense to me either. Maybe give the guy a call and hear him out, we don’t need a hogs and son incident in the fishing side of the house.

Looks like another great day on the water Pete. Keep it up, reading these articles is a nice mid-week reality escape.

Keep the stories coming Pete, I’m another “don’t always comment” guy but I do very much enjoy reading your posts.

Thad, the cat has been out of the bag as far as Spring Lake being a great place to catch early musky. Pete didn’t give out any top secret information that couldn’t have been obtained from a bait shop. Looks to me like you don’t like the idea of people catching musky without a guide.

I enjoy your articles as well, and I think its awesome that your son shares your interest in fishing and you are able to take him along. My kids are 4 and I hope they enjoy the outdoors like I do.

Areosmith,
It has been a blessing that Cam is as interested as he has been in fishing with me. As I’ve said before, both my older two kids had been out with me for years and then they got older and their priorities changed. That is only natural. I hope those experiences that they had and Cam is having will translate into a life long love of fishing and the outdoors. Only time will tell.
