Let’s start here: its been a mild winter. To me that’s a blessing. Still, sitting around this weekend I’m already getting restless to get outdoors and fish. Just two weeks ago Cam and I got out to Spring. Even though the weather was mild for January, the lake was mostly covered in ice. So we launched and broke it up with my new boat! I’ve never claimed to be all that smart. Once we broke up the ice there was a little room to fish but we weren’t having any luck. Fortunately one fish was pretty determined to bite and hit on a figure eight late in the day. As I was swimming the lure around the boat the rod tip was bouncing of chunks of ice! When I hooked this fish the first thing it did was run under the ice! That was interesting. I worked the ski back to the boat and Cam took this picture.

So we knew that was gonna be the last trip with the boat for a while. Fortunately the only damage I did was to break off the transducer from the back of the boat. Given how much ice I plowed through, I was happy thats all I did. Last weekend we were set to hit the muskie show but I wound up not feeling good all weekend so it was lots of fishing shows on TV. That saved me more than a few bucks!
Friday’s weather made me think we might have to stay home again this weekend, but since it looked ok out this morning we decided to hit the open house at Bedford Sales in Morris. Cam and I looked at rods, reels, and plenty of must have baits. This included my first look at the Alabama Rig. My first though was, ” why wouldn’t that work”? My next thought was, ” why would you want 2 fish on at once”? In total it seems pretty bizarre to me. The highlight of the trip was a chance to talk to bass fishing legend Denny Brauer for about ten minutes. At the end of our chat he signed an autograph for Cam and then posed for this picture. Very cool.

With only one more week in January it seems winter will be a little easier to survive this year.
Pete, Thought the North side was still closed for waterfowl. Did you launch on south lake?

I’m not great with directions but I believe that its the north side thats open all year. The south side of north is closed in the fall for waterfowl. It reopens late December after 1:00 for fishing.

Thanks, I have to find the launch. Getting cabin fever. Must fish!

Pete,
Always impressed with your drive to get on the water whenever you can. Also looks like you’ve got yourself quite the fishing partner. Looking forward to a few of my own as they get a little bigger, although I’m truthfully in no huury for them to start “growing up.” Best of luck in battling Cabin Fever and look forward to more 2012 fish stories.

13Bass,
Your kind to use the word drive! Actually its something that has evolved over time. I was always involved in athletics and have always gotten busy with some kind of game. After college I spent lots of time playing golf and did many amatuer tournaments around the Chicagoland area. At that time I only fished when I went up north to my families cabin. After I got married I moved out to Ottawa and began getting more focussed on bowling. One of the reasons for this is it was much cheaper than golf. Again, besides league I did many tournaments on the weekends. I began to fish a little more locally and discovered how good the fishing was. And bowling they want you to commit to 35 weeks and that got harder as the kids got older with all their activities. I found myself sneaking out to bank fish here and there when i got a few hours. It fit better because I could do it early and be back, many times before the kids even got up. Pretty soon I got a little boat and since then its become more and more about fishing. But if I wasn’t fishing I’d have to do something. I just can’t sit around too often.

larrysfishinghole.com helps explain the regs at Spring Lake..where n when.
Any of you guys ever fish Lake Springfield or Sangchris during the winter months? Never have myself, but sounds like they’re another warm water option along with Clinton and Powerton.

I would like to get down to Sanchris as I’ve heard the bass fishing can be great but its a little more than 3 hours for me so that has kept me from doing it. Last year I took a trip to the Shelbyville spillway and that was over 3 hours too. It looked great but I got skunked. I seem to draw the line at 2 hours for a day trip.

Pete,I headed down to Sangchris last week..place is really cool! Think of a warm water discharge lake, like powerton, but in a MUCH,more natural setting. It was a 1.5 hr drive from peoria, but worth the trip for me.I targeted panfish the whole time, bank fishin with flyrod, and caught a BUNCH of nice gills and a few nice crappie. One crappie was a 11” black nosed crappie…really cool! Heading back down monday to target some of their bass, which what I heard is pretty good.Lake also holds the state record for striped bass.
just thought I would share….troy

TW67,
Thanks for sharing. I’d like to hear how you do on bass. If I get down there it will be looking for largemouth.
