First I would like to thank those who came and visited me at the Illinois Deer Classic 2 weeks ago. It was nice being able to put a face together with a screen name! I enjoyed giving the seminars and chatting after the events.

The Heart of Illinois Chapter of Whitetails Unlimited will be having their banquet on Saturday Feb. 23rd at the Four Points by Sheraton in Peoria. Social hour begins at 5:00 pm. and dinner is served at 6:30 pm. It’s a great cause and a lot of fun. Please contact Bill David for tickets @ 309-389-3021. Hope to see you there!

I’m auctioning off 1 whitetail deer mount service and the proceeds will be going to the Heart of Illinois Down Syndrome Association (Peoria chapter). The current bid is $500.00. There’s no expiration date on this certificate and I’ll even re-mount an older head for you. We’ll discuss details if interested. This organization does amazing things to improve the quality of life for people with Down syndrome. My nephew Alex, who has DS, hopefully will be joining me on a whitetail hunt soon. I think it’s important that we share our experiences with them as much as possible. Stay tuned for more outdoor goodies that I’ll be auctioning off if interested! http://www.hoidsa.org/

More new products are coming to me by the truck loads, so I’ll be testing a bunch of new stuff this year and hopefully it will be “Good stuff”. One of the things I’ll be doing is planting new food plots in different properties and using multiple brands. I’ve never planted food plots before, so I thought this would be a great project coming from an everyday guy with no experience in this topic. So far I’m using seed and equipment from Bio-Logic and Horny Buck Seed Co. . I’ll be testing different varieties, blends and techniques all recommended by the manufacturer. I may have some more companies on board soon too!

Don Higgins released a book a few months ago called Real Wold Whitetail Icons. I wrote 3 chapters in it along with 12 other well known whitetail addicts. I’ve read about half of the book so far and I think it’s probably one of the best books ever put together regarding strategies for hunting whitetails, excluding my material. Many of these guys are patriarchs of the whitetail world and the material is from decades of trial and error. Don did an excellent job of compiling it! He sells them on his website Higgins Outdoors.

Finally, here’s a picture (or 2) of the last buck I got a few months ago in December during the second rut. The second rut is not recognized by many, including some of my friends who are experienced whitetail nuts. Even though I respect their opinions, I think otherwise. This buck was with a doe and in the 4 days I hunted him, he was holding tight with her for the last 16 hours or so. He grossed about 166” as a typical and was a good buck to end the year with.
