A month to go and it doesn’t even seem right. I remember waiting all year for the bow season to get here and now we’re almost through with it. Where does the time go? Well, I can tell you one thing, we still have some great hunting left! I love late season bow hunting almost as much as I like early season.
With this year, came stories from some of the H.O. readers who decided to give hunting from the ground a try. One of them was Luke Stuber from central Illinois. here’s his email to me:
“Marc,
Last summer I bought one of your ghille suits and decided to spend some time on the ground this year. I wanted to let you know that on November 9th I was able to take my first buck off of the ground with a bow at ~15 yards.
Quick Story about the Deer:
The buck is an old deer that only had three good legs; he did not use his right front leg at all to get around. I believe he was injured back in 2008 based on sheds that I’ve found and old trail camera footage. Even with his injury this year was the first time that I had ever seen him. I shot him back in a thicket of honey suckle and honey locust trees. One of the reasons I had never hunted in this area was because there was not a good place to hang a tree stand.
I had found the previous two years worth of sheds in this 2-3 acre patch of brush and had some trail camera photos of the deer in the general vicinity.
Thanks for all the advice,
Luke Stuber”
I get so many of these types of emails but don’t post them because I just simply get too busy. Anyway, I’m glad to see hunters thinking outside of the envelope! Congrats Luke!
I also closed the final chapter on my October 2011 bow kill today as I finished mounting it. Now I can look at the mount and remember the entire story from the scouting phase, to the trail camera stage, to the mounting stage. I personally like to look at my mounts from the story each one tells. It’s those memories that keep hunting alive for me!

Real neat story from the scouting to the trail cams to the harvest to the deer on the wall. That is kind of a wacky position on that awesome deer! I really like the close-up so good!

I just got back from hunting and was doing a semi-live hunt that I could post on Facebook. It was pretty cool and I had 7 deer in front of me although I didn’t shoot anything. Watching them from ground level puts a whole new perspective on hunting. If Jeff had the software here on H.O., I would post my live hunts here. The next live hunt I do, I’ll post here so anyone can follow the action (or the lack of it) semi-live through Facebook.
...
Thanks for the comments guys!Good luck!

Great NA whitetail article Marc. Whitetail hunting in any capacity gets the blood pumping, but the way you do it on the same level must be exhilarating.

Marc, do you have any pictures of what you look like in cover? I have been thinking about a ghille suit but was curious what it looked like when a person is hiding in cover. Thanks

OUTDOORSWOMAN, I do have pictures but this is the easiest way to point you to one quickly. I have a fresh article out in North American Whitetail now and they have one picture of me in a suit standing next to a tree. You’ll have to scroll down a little bit to see it. I purposely left my gloves off in this picture (and my face mask) just so you could see me!

That is an awesome pic and representation of how well you are blended in to your surroundings. It really would have been hard to identify you without the cloves and facemask off.

Thanks for the pointing me to the great article. Do you have ghille suits for blending into prairie grass?

OUTDOORSWOMAN, glad to help! Try the manufacturers of my suit. http://www.bushrag.com They have many different suits to choose from! I wore one of their regular suits for years before they made one for me, and they worked very well.
