Cooler weather tomorrow!

Tue, October 12, 2010

I was just at Wolf Hollow archery in Chillicothe today and happened to be conversing with Larry when he mentioned a big drop in temps tomorrow. As soon as I got home, I checked the forecast and sure enough, the high tomorrow here in central, IL. is in the 60’s! That’s what I’m talking about!!!

With the drastic change of weather comes a drastic change of behavior. In fact, it’s the big “change” that moves them more than the weather itself. Cool weather will move them good but coming off of a heat wave, it will move them even better. Whether it’s freezer meat or racks for the wall, I’m looking forward in shooting some deer!

I noticed some new scrapes and some really fresh rubs on the trees yesterday. In fact, I swear I heard a buck rubbing like there was no tomorrow last week when I was hunting but never investigated it due to the fact it was shooting time. I checked that area yesterday where the noise came from last week and sure enough, there was a tree about 8” wide with its bark shredded. I was only about 50 yards from that area last week while he was rubbing that tree but there was no chance of me sneaking up to him.  Maybe I’ll see him in the near future!

Until the next episode, stay tuned…

I saw that too.  Going out tomorrow afternoon to take a stab at it.  This hot weather has been killing me.

I’ve been out hunting a lot this year already…12 hunts so far.  I haven’t seen anywhere near the deer that everyone seems to be seeing.  My slowest start in 20 years so far.  The deer are there (according to my trail cams) but not doing any daytime movement or have left the property till dark.  I have the feeling the deer have temporarily left my property for neighboring farms that still have corn and beans up.  Anyone else experiencing a very slow start in terms of deer sightings?  Curious to see if I’m the only one.

Let’s hope the change gets them moving Mark. Went out tonight and saw some does and young bucks but not much else moving tonight for me.

I have also had the same kind of season and this being on private property. I at times during the summer had up to 250 pictures a week during some of the hottest times, even some of my larger bucks moving during the day. Right before the season started I was down to 100 pictures a week with most activity during the night, unfortunetly the camera had to be shipped off for repairs so I am not sure where I currently stand as far as movement goes at night. I have been out every weekend including some morning and afternoon hunts during the week and have only seen a few smaller doe’s not within range. I have not used calls, bags or anything else and have triple checked my scent control. I have scouted some of the surrounding areas making sure not to disturb my immediate hunting area and I am not seeing any signs of rubs or scrapes. Also not sure why the dramatic change and every suggestion is also welcomed. Still wouldn’t give it up for the world! Nothing beats sitting in the stand during this time of the year and eagerly awaiting my next opportunity!

Good update.  I’m looking forward to getting out this evening.  My son was lucky enough to get a nice doe on Sunday.  Other than that, our crew hasn’t been in the trees too much with the warm weather.  It’s time to be out there though now.  Good luck all!

So far today I’m not seeing any cooler temp changes as expected…nothing too notable anyway.  Still going out this afternoon though.  Like they say, a bad day in the woods is still better than a good day at the office.
