Kind of glad to put March behind us as it generally was a rather uncooperative weather month. Not entirely surprising I will admit, but that February warm spell kind of got me off track with some wishful thinking. Here’s the latest.
Weight: 4-3
Angler: Bruce Zilkowski
Date: March 26
Location: Newton Lake
Lure: Bass Pro Shops 3/8 oz. Enticer Pro Series Rattling jig (white) with Netbait Paca Chunk Senior trailer (white)
Angler Comments: The first fish was caught out on the main part of the lake. I was pitching to the reeds along the bank and then slow reeling it along the bottom. The fish grabbed it hard and a solid hookset landed it into the boat.
Weight: 4-9
Angler: Bruce Zilkowski
Date: March 26
Location: Newton Lake
Lure: 1/4oz Rat-L-Trap (orange crawdad)
Angler Comments: I threw the bait all the way to the very back of a cove. Water could not have been even two foot deep but it grabbed it right after it hit the water and came aboard pretty quickly after that.
Top 5 Weight: 18-0 (4-9,4-3,3-15,3-0,2-5) culls 2-0 and 1-5
And cool to add a pair of northern pike to our expanded format.
Length: 33.5”
Angler: Jake Breeson
Date March 24
Location: Northern IL river
Lure: Tube
Length: 21.0”
Angler: Jake Breeson
Date March 24
Location: Northern IL river
Lure: Tube
Angler Comments: I went out March 24 with my wife for a walk along a local river and of course had to take a rod. I was actually in search of smallmouth and armed with an ultralight with 4lb fluorocarbon attached to a tube. The smallies wanted no part of it but I got 2 of my beloved pike who weren’t picky.
Top 5 Length: 54.5” (33.5”,21.0”)
Well done guys with a solid March finish. Gotta like a limit within shouting distance of the 20-pound mark before April Fool’s Day and fun to see a new species join our project. This first weekend of April was tolerable in my neck of the woods and while I was unable to get out, here’s hoping a few others had a chance to wet a line. Best of luck and talk to you later. Troy
