Top 5 Update

Mon, September 12, 2016

After a tough couple months in terms of submissions, we darn near hit double figures this week and almost thirty more pounds of bass.  Seems like spring all over again but definitely starting to feel like fall.

Mike Bass

Weight: 1-4
Angler: Mike Mooney
Date: July 26
Location: Lake Vermillion, MN
Lure: Senko (watermelon/red)
Angler Comments: Not a monster, but I don’t get many smallmouth opportunities in Southern, IL. Therefore this little guy will sit on my stats until I have to take him off!! He was caught on a Watermelon/Red Senko in 12-15 feet of water, Sunny

Mike Bass

Weight: 3-12
Angler: Mike Mooney
Date: July 27
Location: Lake Vermillion, MN
Lure: Senko (watermelon/red)
Angler Comments: Overcast, Watermelon/Red Senko in shallow weeds

Mike Bass

Weight: 3-1
Angler: Mike Mooney
Date: July 28
Location: Lake Vermillion, MN
Lure: Senko (watermelon/red)
Angler Comments:  Sunny, Guess What I caught him on?? Just guess!! Watermelon/Red Senko, 12-15 feet of water

Mike Bass

Weight: 4-4
Angler: Mike Mooney
Date: July 29
Location: Lake Vermillion, MN
Lure: Senko (watermelon/red)
Angler Comments:  Sunny, Watermelon/Red Senko, 12-15 feet of water. Was a great last morning fish.
Top 5 Weight: 12-5 (4-4,3-12,3-1,1-4)

Randy Bass

Weight: 2-8
Angler: Randy Sampson Sr.
Date: September 5
Location: West Central IL public water
Lure: Texas rigged worm (motor oil)
Top 5 Weight: 19-5 (5-12,5-8,3-1,2-8,2-8)

Bruce Bass

Weight: 3-13
Angler: Bruce Zilkowski
Date: September 5
Location: West Central IL public water
Lure: Bass Pro Shops Stik-O wacky rig
Structure: Brush
Angler Comments: I cast the wacky to a brush pile half-laying in the water and felt the tug on the line. A solid hook set immediately let me know that I had something decent.  I read a book once on whaling a few years ago that talked about the old whalers going out in their small boats to harpoon the huge beasts and the “Nantucket sleigh ride” that ensued as they were pulled around.  Probably not quite as dramatic as their ride, I still felt a certain kinship with those old-timers as my belly boat was taken for a spin.

Beuce Bass

Weight: 3-7
Angler: Bruce Zilkowski
Date: September 5
Location: West Central IL public water
Lure: Bass Pro Shops Stik-O wacky rig
Angler Comments:Just before I hit the end point I have a real nice, fishy looking cut on my side.  I go in and see some nice pockets among the rushes.  I cast the wacky to the most promising looking one and almost instantly I feel the pick-up.  Hook set and sleigh ride time again!

Bruce Bass

Weight: 3-0
Angler: Bruce Zilkowski
Date: September 5
Location: West Central IL public water
Lure: Rapala SR5 crankbait
Angler Comments: As we near the western end of the large lake I chuck the Rapala near a stand of cattails that are at the water’s edge.  A good hit on the SR5 and the fish is peeling for deep water, when it comes up to jump I can see it’s another good one.
Top 5 Weight: 17-14 (3-14,3-13,3-12,3-7,3-0) culls 2-13,2-8,2-7

Brice Bass

Weight: 4-4
Angler: Brice Wangler
Date: September 6
Location: Southern IL public water
Lure: Experimental
Angler Comments: Likely my last cull of the year as my fishing days dwindle.
Top 5 Weight: 21-7 (4-8,4-7,4-4,4-2,4-2) culls a 4-2

Awesome job, fellas, as a Top 5 veteran makes his 2016 debut, another completes his limit and a pair find some nice culls.  Good stuff there and much appreciated as the 2016 season enters what is likely the last several weeks for most.  I hope to hang in there until November and fight for a few more quality bites along the way.  Here’s hoping some more anglers keep those rods at the ready as well.  Talk to you later.  Troy

Comments

Does Bruce Zilkowski’s west central Illinois public water close for duck hunting in October? If not, that could be a very good month for him.
