Top 5 Update

Mon, May 23, 2016

Another outstanding update this week featuring a pair of Top 5 veterans.  McKendree University bass angler and 2015 Top 5 champion, Austin Chapman, plays some catch up with a limit of fish from a rather busy spring.  And a fellow strip pit fisherman and longtime friend, Jim Junk, is all set to cull after adding a pair of bass last week.

Austin Bass

Weight: 4-14
Angler: Austin Chapman
Date: March 13
Location: Kentucky Lake – Paris, TN
Lure: ¾ oz. Excalibur OneKnocker
Structure: Grass
Angler Comments: To start off my 5 is the left most fish. To put that fish into perspective, the smallie weighed 4.32(my personal best smallie) on the certified scales at Cabela’s Collegiate Big Bass Bash. I ran far down river to a grass patch that I had found in practice. My partner started the day by catching one on the a-rig but I refused to throw it. I am not a fan of the rig being allowed in tournaments. Due to the grass being present I was ripping my lipless through the grass and as it fluttered down these bass were inhaling it. My best 5 from that day alone would be over 20lbs. There were endless amounts of fish in this school and another boat that I shared the spot with caught a 9lb bass out of the school!

Austin Bass

Weight: 5-14 and 5-10
Angler: Austin Chapman
Date: March 21
Location: Pinckneyville City Lake, IL
Lure: ½ oz. Jig
Structure: Point
Angler Comments: This day looks great in the picture, but was rough. These fish were two of only 3 fish I caught. The third fish could have been eaten by these two! They were both caught flipping a jig on main lake points
.

Austin Bass

Weight: 5-2
Angler: Austin Chapman
Date: April 9
Location: Table Rock Lake – Branson, MO
Lure: Spro RK Crawler
Structure: Rocks
Angler Comments: After a rough start to practice, my partner and I abandoned our initial plan and decided to swing for the fences. We put away the spinning rods and 6lb test in clear water for our big cranking sticks and some water with a stain to it instead of the 15ft clarity that we were seeing in other areas. I pulled up in a cove and my first cast with my crankbait I landed a chunky 3.5lb bass. The next cast my partner made he boated one over 3. We left that pocket and continued down the creek where my partner caught one over 5lbs!! We knew we had found something good and we committed to the area for the tournament. My first cast on tournament morning I got hammered and missed the fish. Threw right back in the area and the smallie in my right hand got it. Later in the day we needed a cull. I was working my crankbait along the rocks and I felt my crankbait get hung up in the rocks and I just continued to reel and the pressure popped the crankbait loose and as soon as it came loose that big largemouth loaded up on it. And of course she wanted to have some acrobatic jumps on the way in to scare me and my partner pretty good!

Austin Bass

Weight: 4-12
Angler: Austin Chapman
Date: May 13
Location: Clinton Lake, IL
Lure: 5/16 oz. Jig
Angler Comments: I moved home from College for the summer on Thursday and had planned a crappie fishing day with my dad. After he cancelled due to work obligations, I decided to change it up and go to Clinton for some pre-pre-fishing for the BASS Regional tournament here at the beginning of June. This bass swirled on my jig once and I had a big swing and a miss. I figured it was a carp and kept going down the lake. I turned around to fish the bank again and I made the same flip and this time I felt her thump it and I set the hook and it was on and I got her in the boat!

Top 5 Weight: 26-4 (5-14,5-10,5-2,4-14,4-12)
(NOTE: new leader by 3 ounces over Mark Balbinot)

Jim J Bass

Weight: 2-6
Angler: Jim Junk
Date: May 19
Location: Banner Marsh
Lure: Unweighted Texas rigged Senko

Jim J Bass

Weight: 2-4
Angler: Jim Junk
Date: May 19
Location: Banner Marsh
Lure: Unweighted Texas rigged Senko
Angler Comments: Snuck down to Banner yesterday for a couple hours and managed a couple bass. Both came on an unweighted Texas rigged Senko.

Top 5 Weight: 13-1 (3-4,3-2,2-6,2-4,2-1)

Sounds like a broken record but thanks for the fish fellas as it is always cool to see a new message in the Inbox, makes my day.  Keep ‘em coming and for those who have wavered on joining our quest, go ahead and use today’s report as motivation to submit those bass whether you fooled ‘em a couple days ago or a couple months ago.  If you caught ‘em in 2016 we’re ready to see ‘em.  Best of luck and talk to you later.  Troy
