Kaskaskia River Sauger

Mon, June 06, 2011

The Kaskaskia River Sauger   were biting well all weekend so I decided to put the boat in and do some drifting and trolling on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning before work. With the river levels dropping from 9000 to 6000 cfs over the weekend it has really picked up the bite. There were a lot of boats crammed on the river but it didn’t stop people from catching fish. I ended up with a limit both days with big sauger going 19” and most in the 15-18 range. The Saugs were hitting both Crank baits and 3/8 oz bright colored jigs all day in 12-16 ft of water. Drifters and trollers seemed to have about equal success both days.  It is good to see a healty crop of keeper saugs in the Kaskaskia with most fish caught this year over the 14” keeper mark and a chance at a trophy over 25” is always possible. It seems like the Sauger fishery on the Kaskaskia gets better every year.

I know the bite has been great! My friend and brother caught limit Friday night with the big one being 17.5”. Then Sat. me and a friend went and caught 8 with the big one being 22 1/2” and a small flathead.

22 is a dandy overcuparcher!  the bite was hot the last couple days, with the river dropping everyday now it wont last long.it dropped about 2 ft this morning. another couple days and ill prob be out on the main lake fishin for em. get em while they are hot i guess!

I can’t ever find them on the main lake. Every once in a while i will catch a small one when i’m out for white bass but that is about it.

they are alot more scattered on the main lake, but the average size is alot bigger. if you can get into em its a blast. trolling cranks is about the only way to go on the main lake.
