Hot Weather,Hot Catfishing

Mon, June 13, 2011

With clear weather in the 90’s all weekend it was a good one to be out on the water. The catfish have been excellent the last couple days and should continue for weeks to come. I headed out on a local lake with my buddy Phil for an evening of channel cat fishing/ meat hunting to stock up on fillets for the annual 4th of July fish fry that’s right around the corner. We had most of our luck shallow in 3-6 feet of water using whole rock bass and cut shad. The Channels are in full spawn mode right now and the average fish was in the 4-6 lb range. Big fish of the day were a pair of 10-13lb class channels (forgot the scale). We kept enough for some meat and let the females full of eggs go. The next couple weeks should provide some fine cat fishing in the SW Illinois area.
