WSRC Plans Solar Eclipse Weekend Activities

Sparta, IL - The World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta, IL (WSRC) is stepping up to celebrate the solar eclipse with a slate of activities beginning on Friday August 18th.  The complex is in the path of totality and expects a totality period of 2 min 7.5 seconds, with 100% obscuration.
Friday’s activities begin with move in day for the Friends of the World Shooting Complex “Friendly Fire” BBQ championship.

The contest, sanctioned by the St. Louis BBQ Society, pays out $5,000 with a Grand Champion prize of $850 plus a YETI trophy. Entry categories include chicken, ribs, pork and beef brisket.
Fee for entering the contest is $225. Entry fee includes a 20’ x 60’ RV camping site with 50amp hook-up and water.
Vendors are welcome for a $325 fee.
The Friendly fire schedule is as Follows:
Friday 18th: Move-in, Vending, and People’s Choice;
Saturday 19th: Competition & Vending
Sunday 20th: Vending Opportunities

Additional Friday evening events include a Sunset Yoga class held near the vendor mall, and a stargazing party with Adler Planetarium’s Galaxy Ride Program. The Galaxy Ride team will make their way from Chicago to the WSRC on Friday August 18th. Participants will be able to observe the Sun (during the day) or other objects (at night) through a telescope, touch a REAL piece of the Moon, talk to an astronomer, learn how eclipses work, discover the size and scale of the Sun, Earth, and Moon, find out how fast the speed of light I, get a little exercise at the same time—and much more! The Stargazing Party will also be held near the vendor mall.

On Saturday, The Randolph County Cutters and Strutters NWTF Chapter will be hosting their annual Jake’s Day at the WSRC.  Registration is from 7:30AM to 8AM and takes place at the Sporting Clays Shelter on the west end of the complex. Jake’s Day is a fun filled day with multiple hands on outdoor activities for youth 17 and under. There is no admission fee, but attendees are encouraged to bring a canned food or nonperishable food item. For each item attendees bring, they will receive a ticket for a shotgun raffle that will be held at the end of the day.

Visitors will also be able to view the Friendly Fire BBQ Compitition along the East Trap Line on Saturday.

On Monday There will be ample areas for an unabstructed view of the eclipse throughout the facility. In addition to the viewing opportunities, and special trap shooting event,  will be held from 10AM – 3PM, and participants will be able to shoot trap dring the total eclipse.
