Fatal hunting accident indictment

Sat, January 07, 2012

GALENA— On Jan. 6, 2012 a Grand Jury convened in JoDaviess County to hear evidence against Kelly G. Jackson, 53 years old from East Dubuque, IL, who was involved in a fatal hunting incident on November 19, 2011.

That incident resulted in the death of John Hanlon and the injury of Hanlon’s juvenile son, both from Inverness, Illinois.  All three were firearm deer hunters.

The Grand Jury issued a two-count indictment for the offenses of Involuntary Manslaughter, a Class 3 Felony (punishable 2-5 years in jail and or up to $25,000 in fines), and Reckless Conduct, a Class A Misdemeanor (six months to a year in jail and or up to $2,500 in fines), against Kelly Jackson.

Additionally, Mr. Jackson was issued citations by the Illinois Conservation Police for deer hunting prior to legal hunting hours, a Class A Misdemeanor,  and unlawful possession of a loaded shotgun prior to legal deer hunting hours,  a Class B Misdemeanor, punishable by 1-6 months in jail and or up to $1,500 in fines.

I’m glad to hear justice will be served.

Bucknell,,,I dont see how justice will be served…That boy has to grow up with out a father. This is cold blooded murder. Unless the boy can shoot this POS then there is no justice…eye for an eye

heard (not confirmed) that this person was very reckless and after the shot he and the person with him walked away from the scene.  i don’t know justice can be served either.

A freind of mine told me this guy (Jackson) was a great guy and ethical hunter. My response was…Then his gun shouldn’t have been loaded and shooting before legal hours. The poor family has to live with the actions of a careless hunter.  I hope the family can somehow manage to cope with this tragedy…

Prayers go out to the Hanlon’s family. I hope this guy is never allowed to hold a gun again! (after he serves time)

Justice will most certainly not be served here. The court system in this country is a joke. The offenders in our system seem to have more protection under the law than the victims. This man was reckless in so many ways it is hard to fathom the mindset. Two to five years is not a reasonable punishment in instances like this. Prayers to the family of the victim, hopefully they can find some peace and happiness at some point in the future.

I’d like to hear a lot more details on exactly how this shooting went down.  Every year, and I mean EVERY YEAR, I hear early (dark) shots on opening morning of gun season.  I’m shocked that this doesn’t happen more ofter.  What a terrible tragedy.
