Deer harvest totals lagging

Warm weather hasn’t helped deer hunters much this month.

After a fast start, the Illinois archery harvest currently stands at 10,226 compared to 13,287 last year, 9,677 in 2008 and 8,236 in 2007. Sex ratios are tending toward does, with 70.5 percent of the deer reported females.

Top five counties are: 1. Pike 419, 2. Fulton 268, 3. Peoria 233, 4. Jefferson 225, 5. Vermilion 224.

Youngsters also had to deal with very warm temperatures last weekend, with highs in the upper 80s through much of the state. Harvest was 1,533 compared to 2,409 last year, 1,039 in 2008 and 898 in 2007.

Harvest ratios for youth season were 48.9 percent does and 51.1 percent bucks.

The top six counties were: 1. Pike 86, 2. Randolph 44, 3. Fulton 42, 4-6. Jefferson 32, JoDaviess 32, Wayne 32.
