New Year’s resolutions

Wed, January 04, 2012

1.Fish for a species you don’t normally fish and with someone you normally don’t fish with.

2.Cook some wild game meat over an open fire with hot coals, and share with friends, it’s good for the soul.

3.Even if it’s a 1/10 of an acre, make some habitat improvements for critters, be it food plots, fish cribs or bird houses.

4.Stimulate the economy and buy a new gun or rod and reel this year, it’s good for the whole country regardless of where it’s made (remember everything sold here is at least handled here and was delivered by an American truck driver).

5.Hunt one species with a weapon you wouldn’t normally use, stick bow for rabbit, sling shot for squirrel, single shot 16 ga. for dove, something that brings back that childhood challenge (make sure it’s a legal weapon for that animal and season).

6.Try to learn a new technique for fishing your favorite fish (I.e. learn the wacky rig for bass, homemade stink baits for cats, trolling Jake baits for Muskie, etc.).

7.Shoot your bows and guns more, not to just get better but simply for the fun of shooting.

8.Keep a journal of adventures and trophies, it will make you a better outdoorsman and serve as good reading down the road.

9.Buy a kid or less fortunate person some hunting or fishing gear, as small as a snoopy pole for a grade school child or a used bow for that guy that lost his job and needs some encouragement.

10.Take yourself less serious in the outdoors but take the sport more serious, enjoy it for what it is, the experience.

Wishing you a safe new year, God bless

Great list; one I intend to print and work toward completing.  I’d only add one notion to number 4:  Look hard to find something made here; it’s worth helping as many working Americans as you can.  The options are out there.
