The Mississippi River keeps turning out monster catfish.
The latest came April 15 when Rick Davis of Godfrey caught a 92-pound blue catfish near the power plant on the Missouri side of the river by Portage Des Sioux .
Davis fought the fish for nearly 48 minutes.
“It was like something you’d see on TV,” Davis told Rod Kloeckner of the Belleville News-Democrat. “I watch a show called ‘River Monsters’ on Animal Planet, and they go all over the world searching for these giant fish. Here I am eight minutes from my house and I catch one. That’s how awesome it was.”
He was fishing about 10 miles up river from where Tim Pruitt caught the state and world record blue catfish of 124 pounds.
In that same stretch of river, David Asaro of Godfrey caught an 85-pound blue cat just above the Melvin Price Lock and Dam in 2008.
