I got it done Saturday morning on this monster 8pt. At 7:45 a did a fairly aggressive rattling sequence. 2 minutes later a large deer appeared out of the river bottom 1/4 mile away across the field. I knew it was a buck and when I put the binos on him I could tell it was a shooter. He walked across the field like he was on a string. About 1/2 way across, he made a left hand turn like he was going to head over to another woods. I grunted at him and he took off like a bullet into the woods. I sat there thinking I had just blew it. I was kicking my self for grunting when he popped back out of the woods at 50 yards. He continued to walk directly toward me and turned broadside at 20 yards. I was at full draw and let him have it right in the deer. He took off into the woods and only ran about 70 yards before dying and falling into the river! After getting him in the truck, I drove around to where I have a camera over a large scrape. I had multiple pictures of him on there from the previous week. I had never seen this deer prior to shooting him. I put a tape to him after getting home and came of with a close est of 165”. Not bad for an 8 pointer…....

Wow, he’s yuuuge!  Congrats!  Question though, how else would you shoot him other than letting him have it ‘right in the deer’?

It is just something that a buddy of mine says all the time! Shoot him in the deer, turkey, duck elk etc.

I guess it has worn off on me also!

Fingers slapped with a ruler for a not so subtle attempt at internet scouting.  (I was thinking the same thing!)

Luckily we could get a tractor close to get a rope on him and pull him out. I would still be there pulling him out right now if not for the tractor…..

no need for internet scouting - have a very nice farm in Calhoun County and nice private spot in Madison county!  I do however, duck hunt on some of IL rivers.  just had visions of his deer landing in the Mississippi River!!! Naming a river is next to impossible to locate or gain access to someones hunting spot.  My spot in Calhoun is roughly equal distance between the IL river and Mississippi river.  My Madison County spot is located off of Mooney Creek. I enjoyed your pictures and happy to hear you were able to use a tractor to retrieve buck!!!

JSwamp, it doesn’t get any better than Calhoun county, IMHO.  I’ve never deer hunted there, but I’ve sure spent a lot of time there, starting in 1972.  One of my favorite parts of the state.

Only problem I have with deer hunting Calhoun is hearing the waterfowl shots.  When they are banging good - I can’t help but thinking about the ducks I am missing out on.  Could not ask for a nicer place to deer hunt and duck hunt. Turkey have been rough the last few years but great in Madison county.

Hunted Fuller Lake for several years in the mid 70’s.  Stayed in a buddies cabin on stilts, in Nutwood.  Motored across the Illinois and rowed a small boat to the blind in Fuller.  Lots of good memories!
