i was lucky enough to find these american white pelicans at mendenhall boat ramp south of bartonville IL this evening

Nice. I love to watch them when they fly as a group.

WTF- If you marinade them just right they taste a little like bald eagle.   Seriously cool pix!

Mallard i prefer eagle hands down, It whiter meat.Eagle breast and mushrooms is AWESOME:)

Several years back me and the boys were motoring along as fast as the 25hp would push the 16 foot polarcraft at 0’dark-thrity headed to the duck blind when we pushed right through a big old raft of those things.  They REAK!  Foul smelling Fowl…

I wonder if the smell aint from the gizzard shad they eat???

not many shad left our way on il river ,think their nitch hos been taken up by baby bigheads, sure hope those pelicans eat hell out of them. you dont want to stop on a sand bar where they have been whooeeee.

I too suspect asian carp may be the reason that these are starting to come east into the Illinois and Mississippi River basins. At least I hope.

A couple years ago they were confirmed nesting in Illinois on islands in the Mississippi for the first time.

We had them basically take over an island that had one of our fav summer hangout sandbars on it.  They nested and hatched offspring.  Yea they basically made the sandbar unable to be used for a while.
