I got a new 60horse Mercury late summer last year.  Flushed it a couple of times with the “muffs” even though it has an inlet on the back that is supposed to keep it cool for flushing.  The one (brief) time I used the rear inlet I noticed there didn’t seem to be any water exiting the usual pump outlet.  Had some dripping out of the bottom but that was it.  Just wondered if anyone has a Merc with the same water inlet and if it is supposed to work this way or to be on the safe side I should just stick with the old muffs.  Thanx!!  Mac

Sounds like you need to use the muffs for sure…Some flushing ports are for flushing salt water from the lower unit only when the engine is not running…They do NOT supply water to the impeller and running it without water is a sure fire way for the cooling impeller to fail because the water is also the lubricant..Do you have the service manual?..
