hey every one. just wanting to see what every one is using weapon wise for yotes, ive been hunting since i was 8 years old but im new to the coyote world.. ive got a armalite AR-10 308. alittle over kill i know but just tryin to get it set up for coyotes. also what call sequince has been workin for every one. i got a turbo dog call.. any suggestions would be great

Whatever gun your feel the most comfortable with is the best.  Only time you need to worry about something being too big is if you are worried about saving fur.  Shooting a .308, I wouldn’t worry about saving fur.  Setting up for coyotes is more about position then it is about sounds.  Get to your spot as quiet as you possibly can, park as far away as you can and play the wind.  Most things you can get away with deer hunting, will ruin a yote hunt.  As far as what call to use, its different for everyone and every coyote.  Start out with the basic cotton tail distress and mix in a few pup distress either with the ecall or by hand.  You can play with other sounds later.

thats the thing i want the coyotes of my property but i dont wanna just kill them to be killing. im gettin ready to build a 223 maybe that will help save the fur a little bit. and thanks for the input

I use a 22/250.  Deadly accurate way out there.  As always, shot placement means a lot.  I once shot a coyote at about 130 yards with a lilttle .22LR and dropped him in his tracks.  Shot one with a S&W 44mag 629 Classic…picked him off the ground and threw him back 5 feet…DEAD!  223’s are nice though because the ammo is so cheap compared to a 22/250.

I’m thinking of buying an electronic caller as well.  I assume it’s legal here in IL?  Any recommendations on which one to buy?

John, the best of the best callers out there is Wildlife Technologies.  Sound quality is amazing.  But you will pay for it.  I think WT is in a class of its own with the foxpros and others below it.  Everyone and their cat has a FP and that to me is a reason not to get one.  Every coyote in the country has heard a FP blaring out across the country side and are familiar with the sound.  Find something you can upload your own sounds to it and then your can create sequences with different mixes of sounds.

i bought the primos turbo dog.. i like it so far for the money. i paid 150. i got it because its small and ive been out 5 times now with it and had coyotes come running in all five times, 2 of witch came all the way to the call and nocked it over.

The 22/250 is the standard of the coyote industry for sure, and not to bad as fur damage goes. The 308 I feel is way to much gun if trying to keep the fur, but will work fine for putting them in bone yard. Coyote’s price are good right now for well fured and complete pelts, but rubs and damaged pelts are still very cheap. Try calling early morning or late evening for best results, and please don’t waste your time trying to call yotes at night. I know most everyone thinks this is a good idea, but I find calling yotes at night does more to teach them about me calling than putting them in the truck bed. The night calling does work well on fox, but fox are fox and don’t respond the same as yotes. Best to stick with what you know works best…............................RT

These comments are exactly the reason I use many different mouth blown calls, as everyone uses an electronic caller these days usually blaring some king of rabbit in distress call. 

I wouldn’t worry about a 308 doing pelt damage, in my experience, the faster small calibers (220 swift, 22-250) do more damage (pelt tearing) than the bigger, slow deer-sized calibers.  If you chose the right bullet with your 308, you won’t even be able to tell what caliber shot it.

As for selling a coyote…good luck!  About 1 out of 3 has a pelt worth anything, and even then you would be lucky to get $5 in the carcass and $10 skinned!
