Muzzleloader Law for deer

I am a pistol hunter and love hunting with pistols. I feel left out when it comes to muzzleloader hunting. So I read the regs on deer hunting with a muzzleloader and noticed the only thing a muzzleloader must have is a 16” barrel. Hmmm, my current deer pistol that is a 45-70 has a 16” barrel. Why can’t I have the same gun set up just as a muzzleloader? For reference, I am shooting a Thompson Contender and Encore. I am wonder if I can take a Encore Muzzleloader barrel and cut it down to 16” and legally take it hunting as a muzzleloader? I sent an email to the DNR so we will see what they have to say.

Here are the posted regulations on Hunting Devices and Ammunition.

If this is legal, do you thing a modern high powered muzzleloader barrel could be almost cut in half and still be able to shoot accurate and with enough power to do the job? I am not talking about 200 yard shots, but at least 75 in hopes….

Snuck out back to try and capture a GBH that lit at the back of my pond…he decided I made him nervous. Turned around and this hawk was toting a snake! Try as I may, I cannot get sharp images of birds-in-flight. pfft. anyhoo, I tried some LR magic…but I still aint happy! :(

So I jacked with the camera when he shot over the hill and when he popped over the trees he had given up the snake. Took a bunch more photos trying manual focus…pfft…

St. Jude Bow Buildalong

Last year I built a long bow for a local St. Jude auction. This event is actually put together by one of the HO bloggers Treehugger. This event is a weekend long horse trail ride held at Jubilee State Park in Peoria County. This year I wanted to build another one and step it up a little bit compared to last years. People always ask about how to make one of these so I figured I would show y’all how I do it. This is how I do it, doesn’t mean its right. haha.

Disclaimer: I do not build bows as a business nor do I sell bows. I just make them for myself and as donations for an event or two a year. Please do not ask how much to have one made.

Ok, had to get that out of the way. I have a week off (between jobs) and I wanted to get this bow going before it was too late. My plan for this bow will be a takedown model with a custom matching wood storage case. I am getting all the materials together today and starting on cutting all the pieces. The bow will have a Walnut and ?? riser. Not sure what to put in the riser yet. Need to go to the wood store and find something. The limbs will be clear fiberglass, spalted maple on front and back with walnut, bamboo and red or white glass in the core. Thats the plan anyway. Will see if thats it all pans out. Things tend to change on the way.

Pictured below is what I am starting out with. Still need to plane all the laminate and start the riser.

This is the wood that will show up on the limbs. It has a thin coat of clear to kinda give ya an idea what the finished product will look like. It will be a lot better under that glass.

This is the design the riser will have. This is just a test sample I did today to make sure my jigs were still good. The light wood will be walnut and the dark will be ???. It will have some red and or white glass between it all as well.

Anyway, I will keep this thread up to date and try and document as much as I can. Feel free to ask any questions.

Tournament Organizers Announce Two Additional Fishing Categories To Be Added To The Great River Golden Reel Fishing Rodeo, Biggest Bluegill & Biggest Crappie!!
Tournament organizers have decided to add Biggest Bluegill & Biggest Crappie to the optional fishing categories to increase the chances for anglers to take home some cash. That makes over a dozen different fishing categories and prize levels that angler’s will have the opportunity to compete in!
In addition, the tournament’s activities have grown to include a Fisherman’s (Goes Without Saying) Liars Contest and a Catfish Nugget Recipe Cook-Off. Both events will present awards for the best tasting catfish nugget recipe and the most outlandish fisherman’s tale! Additional activities throughout the day will include a Fishing Tackle/Nautical Swap Meet, a kids casting contest, face painting and a Mystery Fish Contest where spectators will be given the opportunity to guess the weight and what species of fish will be weighed in last at the close of the tournament to win a prize. All of the tournaments events are open to the public with everyone invited to participate in the festivities.
If there is only one tournament you fish all year, this has to be the one!
Early bird anglers are already registering for this summer’s Great River Golden Reel Fishing Rodeo on the Mississippi River in Burlington Iowa. The tournament will bring anglers and their families together for great food, fun and fishing.
Scheduled for Saturday, August 11th, 2012, this one day, family-oriented, fishing tournament will offer both the competitive and casual fisherman a crack at an estimated $10,000 in cash & prizes. Reasonable entry fees, great cash prizes, top notch hospitality and fun activities for anglers of all ages will set this event apart from other area tournaments. With a variety of eligible species such as channel & flathead catfish, large & smallmouth bass, bluegill, and crappie and more than a dozen ways to win, The Great River Golden Reel Fishing Rodeo has plenty to offer anglers of all skill levels. Everything about this event is aimed towards being fishermen friendly so tournament anglers can enjoy the incredible fishing resources on the Mississippi River while competing against fellow anglers. If catching a big catfish, bass, bluegill, or crappie is a thrill for you there is no better time or place to make it happen. If you are planning on fishing this event, spread the word!
A special thanks to our current list of sponsors including Oquawka Boats, Suzuki Marine, Great Lakes Boat Company, G3 Boats, Alliant Energy, Casey’s General Stores, Midwest Fishing Tackle, Eagle Claw Hooks, & HP Coolers. These businesses are going out of their way to make sure that the local fishing community has a great time. We encourage tournament participants to support the sponsors who make this event possible.
If you are interested in becoming a Great River Golden Reel Fishing Rodeo Sponsor or would like to receive additional tournament information, contact Brad Grace at (319) 931-8832 or visit the tournament website at www.goldenreelfishingrodeo.com.
