Crappie at Lake Bloomington are just starting to move up with the males up on beds when water temps are around 63, another week or so and they should be on fire

My young teenage son and a friend caught 85 crappie Saturday late afternoon at Lake Bloomington. Professionals they are not. However- they were throwing small white jigs and they said as soon as they released one they already had another on the line. Might be happening right now!

they are up shallow but only one out the 60 or so we caught had eggs, so the males are up and females are just coming up to the shallows…..... the good news is the action will continue so keep sending those boys out for more good times, the next couple weeks will see more fish shallow and the chance for a true trophy Crappie….... not that they didn’t already have a spectacular day….... I bet they were smiling ear to ear

They could not have been happier! It was one of those 1 of 1000 days that everything went perfect. They were fishing by themselves so that was adventurous, they had lots of action and they could get good enough cell phone reception to constantly send me and the other Dad pictures of the action. After about 20 pics I finally had to say “Ok,ok- I get it. You are out-fishing the old man already!”

Will do! Thanks Matt. ps- They are good kids. Take a kid hunting and you’ll never have to hunt for your kid! Take a kid fishing and well… they’re hooked! Corny but true. Thanks again.

Had some coal black crappie up close to the bank today in a deep strip mine lake. Not as many as I would have liked, though. And the weed growth is so thick it’s tough to get to them from the bank. Gotta get the boat out and hit the deeper wood, I think, for that lake. But folks in ponds with crappie should be able to slam them from the bank .... until this weekend! Cold front could change everything.

Your right Jeff; the cold front has really put a hamper on the fishing, not just crappie but everything.

I actually went out tonight, had a couple hours.  I ended catching about 30 crappie, redear, and bluegill on a yellow tube jig.  4 of the crappie were really nice - close to 2 lbs.  I didn’t even take anything to put them in, just threw em back.  I figured I was just killing time.

So glad to have finally gotten out. I had good luck with the blue gill, and ended up with a respectable limit. The friend I went with was was bass fishing, and ended up catching a couple nice ones.
