Yea there was a wolf killed in NW illinois. The attached picture is of the wolf. It was killed north of Savanna, IL about 15 miles north of where I hunt within 5 miles of the Mississippi river. See the comparison to the 8pt buck below the wolf. I havent heard who killed the wolf, but have heard what land this was shot on. Personally, I dont think we should be shooting an animal so rare in our neck of the woods.
Whoops, i didnt realize this picture was really well known with an entire aritcle posted by galenabob, or i wouldnt have posted the picture. I think it would really need to see any of these rare animals, wolves, mountain lions, seeing any of them would make for an awesome day in the woods.
“Personally, I dont think we should be shooting an animal so rare in our neck of the woods.”
I agree with you CCH, but I can also see how a mistake like this could be made. We all know about ground shrinkage; size is a hard thing to judge. I would bet those that thought they were shooting a coyote were telling the truth—after all, who expects to run into a wolf around here?
I am pretty sure whoever shot this wolf had an idea he was in the area by trail cam pictures or others sighting him and actually being a good outdoorsman and not pulling the trigger. I can see making the mistake if you have no idea there might be a wolf in the area, but i dont think that was the case here, besides this animal is about 3 times the size of a coyote.
I, for one, can totally see how an honest mistake can be made. Particularly if the wolf was cruising through some high grass or CRP. If you’ve ever been black bear hunting you know how difficult it can be to size up an animal. I wonder when the first person is going to get nailed for shooting one? I hope it doesn’t happen to someone who made an honest mistake.
I might be wrong… but I always thought if I was in the woods during FA deer season and a coyote came by I could shoot it with my slug gun? Am I wrong? If so, thanks for the information.
You can shoot coyotes with a slug. ONLY during deer firearm season and you must have a valid open deer permit. That is the law for hunting coyotes with slugs. The coyote season is closed during the first two firearm seasons unless you have a unfilled firearm deer permit.
