Theres got to be some H.O.‘ers out there spending some time chasing birds.  Let’s get some reports going.  I made the decision to give up on deer for the year with 85 lbs of meat in the freezer from the 10 pt I got and get after some birds for the rest of the season.  Me and a buddy got out in the crap warm and no wind conditions today and managed to get everything we shot at (for a change!), which was 2 beautiful mallard drakes and a GW teal.  What about the rest of you?

I’ve never been duck hunting, but a plate of seasoned duck and some mashed potatoes and corn makes me HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY

Haven’t hunted since the 26th, got a mallard and a bluebill. Hoping to get into them next week!

Haha backwoods, you sound like a certain someone on duck dynasty.  I cooked the mallards in the oven yesterday wrapped in bacon, with cream cheese on the fillet and brown sugar spinkled on top.  This combo is a delacasy (spelling?) to me!  We duck hunted again this morning and it was very slow, only got 1.  The weather man was wrong once again.  It was supposed to be a 17 mph wind, it was 2 mph tops.

Waterfowling?  I managed to kick that addiction 4 years ago and ain’t looked back.  If you are hunting public in illilois you’re a glutton for punishment! smile

I actually went out Wednesday for the first time in 4 years and it was as pitiful as I remember.

Good luck to yall! smile

Yea some days are rough for public hunters Oz, but then there are the days that are rough on the greenheads and honkers.  Its all good, i will take a tough day in the duck blind over a great day indoors anytime.

Real slow today, fog all morning until 9:30 and absolutely no wind.  Shot the only 2 ducks within range, and mallard drake and a hen gadwall.  Got to hunt a real neat spot though.  Lots of fun still.

It has been super slow.  Went out after Thanksgiving and people were pulling blinds and deeks because of ice.  Yesterday it was 60 degrees.  We are still waiting for the major migration that isnt going to happen.  The problem we are running in to is that there is plenty of natural feed and ducks dont have to travel much from the rest areas.  Actually heard of a club hunting their rest area Saturday for the first time in their 100+ year history! Supposedly there are 150,000 birds around us.

Birds are here but not much motivation to get off the big water with mild conditions and tons of feed close. More birds here now than the 10 yr average. We need wind and nasty stuff to move them around. Check it out… http://wwx.inhs.illinois.edu/files/1913/5431/0083/il11262012.pdf

Monday and Tuesday next week might be the last days to get on the water with lows in the 20’s Sunday - Thursday.  Hopefully those last 2 days are worth it because i am taking vacation days for sure!

had the last 4 weeks off and hunted most of those.  only had 1 good day and 1 great day.  the good day was November 12th which 4 guys ended up with 10 ducks for the day (mostly gadwall)  and the great day was this last monday which was a site to be seen.  ducks all day long on the river.  (pool 18 of the Mississippi)  the rest of the time was spent wishing we had brought the fishin poles.  out of vacation days and have to work for about 7 straight.  i may miss the rest of the push.  here is hoping the shooting stays good on the river until next Tuesday.

Yea we had the best shoot of the season Tuesday with me and a buddy shooting limits of mallards along with four bonus birds including a beauty of a pintail drake and a goose. It’s hard to believe there is only five more days of duck season.  I am hoping to hunt the last three days and then the focus turns to geese.

I have heard nothing but reports of all geese starting to stack up here in Northern Knox County.  I have not seen a survey by the state in over a week but i have seen the skies full all mornings long this week.  it should be a good next couple of weeks with only snow flurries in the 10 day forecast. so nothing should move them out for a while.
