Didn’t hear but maybe 10 shots all day, although the buck movement on the farm I hunt was good.  One hunter in our group got a nice 11 point and 3 other shooters were spotted, one missed.

Thursday was awfull, absolutely disgusting!  Only heard 3 shots, but no surprise, this year has been bad since october 1st. I’ve only SEEN 4 DOES ALL YEAR!  in past years I would see atleast that many every night.  In the past I limited myself to 1 mature doe and 1 mature buck a year,  but the guys on the neighboring farms shoot anything that resembles a whitetail.  Having said that, I believe the results of that philosophy has finally showed up in our deer numbers.  So I hope all those stories these types of hunters had to tell about their “awesome” hunts was worth it because its going to take a LONG time to rebound from this, if it ever does come back.  The worst part for me is, my daughter is finally old enough to take hunting with me, she is 7, and she is losing interest when we dont see any deer everytime we go out.  I try to teach patience, perservence and hard work pays off, but when she sees the amount of work and time that I/we put into it and no results it detours her.  Anyways, I dont mean to be negative, but to sit and see what has become of deer hunting now from the time i started hunting with my dad in 1987, when I was 5, its absolutely horses$%#!  I was always told you cant kill them from your couch, well I can see the same amount from there!

Fulton I feel your pain dealing with taking your kids hunting and keeping them excited about being in the outdoors.  In today’s hi tech world kids attention spans are very short.  Sure there are other things to view while hunting but seeing the game you are after makes it a whole lot better.  You always hear about taking a kid hunting that were loosing the younger generation well I’m here to tell you we will loose them easier with multiple hunting trips without seeing deer.  Made 4 hunts during the youth season without a sighting and the 1st gun season.  I think they are about ready to throw in the towel this year.  On top of the money spent on unfilled tags!!

I couldn’t agree with you more muzzy, to me hunting is and always has been about the time in the woods and spending time with my father and now my daughter, not the animals that we are after.  Having said that, and having the appreciation and passion I have towards the whitetails, its just heartbreaking to see what it has become and I hope it doesnt get any worse for guys like you and I!  I’ve never hunted because it was"cool”, I hunted because it was a way of life and a means for extra food.  Good luck to you and your family! I hope the years to come are very bountiful for you guys.  Passing on the tradition of hunting and the great outdoors is truly a priveledge, as long as we can keep the kids attention.

I’ve owned the property and lived on it for 5 years . This is the worst I have ever seen it in 5 years. First shotgun season I seen 21 does and young in two days . Stayed out of what I call my back yard all last week. Hunted from 6am to 5 pm yesterday and 6 am to 5 pm today.  Not one deer?. Where did they go?. I checked my trail cam today and nothing , not one picture. I am stumped.

I don’t have a son to take hunting but used to wish I did, I’ve changed my mind. Great memories afield hunting where I currently live are hard to come by due to the lack of ground, lack of game, and the fighting over each little piece. I wouldn’t discourage my child from hunting, but would secretly hope he had no interest. Sad really. Even though I have many great hunting memories, I know good times and memories would be few and far between for a young person starting now. I know there would never be enough good memories to provide enough cover scent to cover the smell underneath the sport of deer hunting as it has turned into a stinkin mess.

Very well stated yellowstone Thats exactly the way I feel.  It is just so sad to think of the way it used to be before the outfitters and the TV shows and do what ever it takes to get a trophy and to hell with others.
