I just started using a electronic game call to call coon at night. This has been a blast but I have one problem. I am using a bolt action .22 cal. rifle to shoot them with. This is not getting it. The coon come charging in a lot of times and more than one at a time and I cannot get them all, plus I have had some get away after getting shot with a long rifle hollow point. I am looking for more punch. I would love to get a .22 mag but I cannot find one in semi-auto. Are there any .17 calibers out there that come in auto? Also do the 17’s have enough punch to get the job done. I would not have to worry about long shots, most of the ones that I have gotten have been 20 yards or less, the last one was at 12 feet! So far the coons that come into the raccoon distress are all large to 3x size and the heaviest has weighted in at 22 pounds!!

Marlin makes a 922M auto loader 22 Mag.  I like the 22Mag for the ammo prices.  .17 cal are awesome but the .22Mag has been around so long I dont think you could go wrong.

150, I don’t think you can go wrong with either one. I love the .17s myself.

Sounds like a good time!  Are coon hides bringing a good price or are you just thinning them out?

12 gauge with 3 1/2 inch mags sounds sufficient to me

I agree with Andy.  The bigger the better for coons…unless you need the hides.

worry about bullet placement. Get a ruger 10/22 with a 25 rd magazine with open sights. Mine shoots best with high-speeds. You can go hollowpoints I guess but don’t need to. They are probably one of the most reliable .22 autos on the market. course finding shells may be challenging.

If you talk pure power the charts are where to look.  The .17hmr with a 20gr xtp has 250 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle and at 100 yards it has 137 ft/lbs.  The .22WMR has with 30 gr v-max has 322 ft/lbs at the muzzle and 141 at 100 yards.  While the .22WMR falls off faster down range than the .17hmr, the .22WMR has a bit more knock down from 0-100 yards.  Past 100 yards both would have trouble opening the way they were designed to.  Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the help from everyone. The most money I got from one pelt was $28 so yes I do want the pelts to sell. Next I have been to 3 gun stores and no one makes a 17 auto. I have tried using a normal .22 but with the ammo shortage I cannot get the right kind that has worked well for me in the past. I was looking for Yellow jackets by Remington. Solids do not work well for me and the super fast Stingers and Minnie Mags are to fast and do not open up at close range. I am shooting these coons at less than 15 yards. So the only guns that I can afford are, .22 and .22 mag revolver or a .22 mag lever gun. The revolver is easy to get, the lever gun has to be ordered, but I do have all spring and summer to get it.
