I always end up coming back to the cottontail in distress calls.  I think I’ve killed more coyotes off of that call than all the others I’ve tried combined.  Good luck…its addictive!

Rabbit in distress is probably the best.

got up this morning at 7:30 and looked out the back window and saw a “rabbit in distress”-TWO coyotes, 40 yards from the porch, fighting over a dead rabbit- 30-06’d the first one and the 2nd one jumped on him as he was spinning around- And then there were NONE! But boy are my ears ringing from being under that porch roof!

How long do you have the rabbit call working? Do you play it constantly or on and off? Thanks

I generally call for 1-2 minutes slowly lowering the volume.  After that I sit for 15 minutes or so and wait.  I use either a fox pro electronic call or a mouth call.  Haven’t noticed a difference in the numbers of dogs that respond to either call.

Ok, I will toss out a little I have learned over the years, and I have put my fair share in the bone yard. Do your home work if you want to be a successful caller, and that means taking the time to locate. Early morning, or right at dark are the best times to go out and locate areas that are best to call. You might try howling, or if you have a siren to locate with that works good as well. Once you locate a group, or individuals, and have decided where to set up, then when you do go into that location go in as quiet as possible. You are going into an area where you know they are already, so no need to make things more difficult. Know the direction of the wind, and take it into consideration when choosing your calling location. Most will try to work down wind from the call, so use that to your advantage, and setup accordingly. Give it time, and keep your head on a swivel at all times, things can happen real fast at times, so always be ready for anything. Make sure your equipment is ready to go, and in good condition, and always have the best equipment your personally able to afford. I have found out over the years purchasing quality items to use afield has never been a bad investment for me. Good luck, and I hope you get a pile of song dogs….............RTT

Sling shot, I hope you are aware of the trapping season dates ?? Trapping is not open year round upon coyotes, but you may hunt them year round legally. I just hope that your reference to the other morning was in fact during the legal trapping season dates, and that your comment of the other morning was just your own special way of expressing your story. I know I say things like that, and the other day could have been three months ago, just the way we express ourselves at times, but may lead people to think differently. good luck.
