Alright all you fellow trappers out there, if these two legendary mountain men were to square off in an all out “MountainMan Competition”, who would win????? Both of these men have accomplished feats in their lives that would make the most grizzly of men in todays society quiver in thier boots! They have both significantly played a major role in shaping our history as americans more than anybody can imagine! I personally am a big fan of ol’ Jedediah and think he is among the higher echelon of the more famous mountainmen including Bridger! I could bring a few more names into the equation but then I could go on forever because alot of these “mountainmen” definitly deserve their place in american history! but I wanna know who do ya’ll think is more tougher, smarter, influental, and etc., I am just bored and looking for descent convo!! so…..... yea lets talk trappers! I think Jedediah would win!! anybody that can get mauled by a grizz and live to tell about is a “mountain of a man” to me!!!

Get em’ Coon Ass! I am ashamed to be one who enjoys the fruits of the outdoors and does not know these 2 individuals you speak of. I have been wanting to research them but have not had the time. Maybe you could enlighten us on these pioneers.

I would love to enlighten everybody about these trailblazers, I just have no clue where to start!!! but ill try my best folks! Jedediah Smith was one of the most pivetol influences on what we call “westward expansion”, he had been one of the first “americans” to successfully “trailblaze” and survive in the unforgiving terrain that is the west. His biggest achievement by far in my opinion was the discovery of the South Pass(which native americans had showed him), this “trail” was responsible for guiding and allowing the most accessible route for pioneers looking westward. He also had worked for one of the most prominent men in the fur industry and that would be Gen. William Ashley, but he is a whole nother’ story in itself, all I have to say is “Ashley’s 100”. anyways…...... Jedediah had survived many skirmishes with the native americans, and the most famous and probably most known story is when Jedediah was mauled by a big “grizz”, he was hunted, attacked, and was in grave danger with his head in the bears mouth when his fellow “mountainmen” came and rescued him from the bear, he had darn near lost “half of his scalp” and suffered broken bones! But did it discourage him…......no…...he was adement on having his buddy sow his head up and continue on!!! ok…....folks thats a lil tidbit about Mr. Jedediah Smith, I could go on but I really want ya’ll to learn for yourselves and build ya’lls own views on these amazing americans! Now…. I wanna tell ya’ll bout Mr. Bridger but then I would be ruining the oppourtunity for ya’ll to learn for yourselves and maybe… just maybe hold some interesting convos in the near future! Hopefully this tiny lil’ tidbit gets more of the Heartland Outdoors patrons interested!!!...........and all u beaver trappers out there REALLY need to know who ol’Uncle Jed is!! i would almost think he was part beaver himself!!!!!

Would you recommend any good books written on these individuals? Not much of a reader, but I just landed a job that enables me to do so in my down-time. I have been burning through 3-4 hunting/fishing magazines a night.

amazon.com has a really good selection of books, ill hafta dig through my mountains of books to find some of the ones i liked and read, I do have to say a really cool and short book that I think anybody would like to read trapper or not would be “Goodbye Mountain Man” by Donald Jack Anderson I think anybody with an interest in history and the outdoors would LOVE this book, its not terribly long but definitly worth reading! and also has a few snippets about Smith and Bridger. I have a couple more books i read that u might like also considering you being a Marine and all…. but heck I almost wanna bet u probably read or at least know about these individuals and their books….. one is called “Marine Sniper” which is about legendary sniper Carlos Hathcock, and the other is called “Dead Center” by Ed Kugler( also a sniper in nam). both those books are really good reads, I have a crap ton o’ books and would have to say I am almost as passionite about reading as I am about “timbercraft”, and if you like true storys and gritty mafia books you should read a book called “The Outfit”, it talks about the “Chicago Mafia”, its beginnings and how it spills into our national community and so on…... anyways enough about that….. what bout ya’ll any good book recomendations?

Coonass,
You ever listen to Johnny Horton?  You might like some of his tunes, particularly the song “Jim Bridger.”  Not a bad tribute song.

@ mountainman, sounds familiar…. but I dont think I have ever heard it! I will definitly try to find it tonight, I always love those kinds of songs! I have a buddy that says he listens to him! thanx! anymore good ones?.....@ colt…...... hey I guess I was thinking of another book that has snippets about Jed and Jim, I went to go through some of my books earlier and stumbled upon Goodbye Mountainman and started to thumb through it and didnt really find much mention of these 2, the book definitly talks about some legendary trappers including E.J. Dailey but I couldnt find anything about J&J, I must be thinkin of another book I got but I just cant figure out which one!! Ill keep going through my books and find the one im thinkin of! when i find it I wont let ya down colt! Its in there somewhere!! Either way though u should definitly read goodbye mountainman it is 4 sure a top notch read, only a 100 pages or so, but every sentence brings intrigue and an impulse to keep reading!! any good books u know of???
