Second guessing myself today as I found a juvenile northern in my minnow trap.
I have alot of respect for this species, before I had kids and got married used to catch alot of them in the small feeder creeks where I targeted smallmouth. Always referred to them as waterwolfs cause thats what they reminded me of.
Anyway I like to trap my own minnows, especially if I can use minnows that came from the creek thats feeds the body of water I’m fishing.
My question is. What do you use for bait if you trap minnows?
For years I’ve used the leftover ends of the breadloaf my kids wont eat, roll em’ up in a ball and let em’ sit for couple days in the sun.
Always worked in the past but in these drought conditions I’m having trouble even finding water deep enough to sink my trap.
I guess on the plus side, next spring when the waters cold I’ll have a new place right out my back door to target the waterwolves I havent fought for way too long.
It never fails to amaze me how and when mother nature surprises me,You could literally jump across this “ditch”,but if I caught a 4” northern in my trap, I know dang well momma was there this spring laying her eggs.
