Yesterday My youngest son(10) and I were at the IDNR Youth Goose Hunt over by Canton. This was our first time hunting geese, or any waterfowl for that matter. We had a blast watching all the geese and I was trying to learn everything I could. Our pit masters helped the boys blow their calls, gave them tips and the whole nine yards. It was a slow day for shooting for us but there was 1 goose shot. They all just wanted to fly out of range.

Well even tho it wasn’t the best day hunting we still had a blast. My boy can’t wait to do it again( me too for that matter). My boy had so much fun that he never sat down, ate lunch as fast as possible and was waiting for everybody to go back to the pit and hunted till the last min.  When we pulled out of where we were hunting he ask how soon could we do it again.

So I could use some help. I don’t know much about goose hunting. I have spent some time today looking for a place we could go goose hunting for a day without breaking the bank.  I guess the places I looked at are cheaper than going out and buying decoys and finding a place to hunt.

So if anyone can help with a hunt club to go to(or willing to share their pit for a day), I would be very grateful. smile

I seen a goose this evening with a silver leg band grazing by the boat ramp in a melted off patch of grass with about 10 others.  Pretty small so I’m guessing a female?  I’m not a waterfowler so who can tell me?

Seen a deer with a white collar once too. 1 1/2 year old buck right under me with his necklace on!  Seen him twice that week.  He almosted acted like he was ashamed of it.  It was on the Shelbyville SFWA ground about 8 to 10 years ago.  I’ve seen more albino deer than collared deer!  Lol!

A good friend of mine shot a banded goose a couple years back. I never paid much attention til then!  Pretty cool!

IN REFERENCE TO YOUR LEG BAND SIGHTING OF A CANADA. THE SIZE OF THE GOOSE DOESNT ALWAYS DETERMINE SEX. THERE ARE MULTIPLE SUB-SPIECES OF CANADA GOOSE. I THINK 5-6. THERE ARE LESSER CANADAS,HUTCHINSON,AND CACKLERS THAT ARE ALL SMALL. I HAVE BEEN WITH 4 PEOPLE THAT KILLED LEG BANDS ON THEIR FIRST GOOSE HUNT. IVE BEEN HUNTING GEESE ALMOST 40 YRS AND ONLY HAVE 4.
