I was out today working on some food plots and I was shocked to find a fresh dead deer in the middle of the food plot. I called neighbor property owner who hunts and he told me he knows of another found in a creek little over a week ago and that one was within 1/2 mile of me. He also told me he was told of someone else in peoria county who found around 10 fresh dead deer last week as well!!! Anyone know of or having the same thing in there area? This is in peoria county. Also , few years ago I found 15 dead on our property from EHD when Illinois was hit hard with it. It scares the crap out of me as I have passed on all deer four years in a row trying to recover from the last go around with losing so many deer. This last year they finally had turned around where this year I was now gonna take some deer this year. I sure hope Illinois doesn’t go through another hard hit year! We have enough problems without this again and again.
Anyone have any idea about this type of thing happening in the spring? I have only seen it early fall so my gut tells me something else is going on. Input about this would be great, thanks!

I have not seen anything yet, and since it is so wet it should be OK for EHD. It is the dry weather with stagnant waters that is a good breeding ground for EHD.

I would call your local cpo and report what you found. It seems way early to be finding ehd deer.

I was told the person who found the numbers of dead deer that data was taken from the animals is what I was told. I will report it but with just one dead not much I’m sure will be done is my guess. I just wanted to see if there are more reports of this going on either elsewhere or in same county was all. Past history tells me this is not a fluke.

Whitetailfreak,

I talked to cpo today and he told me they are seeing deer that are dying 6-8 months after getting EHD. He said look for swollen hooves and nails split open. So here ya go, so now we worry not only early fall EHD and now worry about it in the spring! Or maybe it’s always been that way and I never knew that. Just trying hopefully make people aware of what is currently going on in my area and hoping all others are not effected!
