I have a 9 year old and he uses a Remington 870 with a shortened stock.  Works great for him.

H&R makes a youth slug gun with a bull barrel.  The extra weight of the barrel greatly reduces the recoil.  I also like the fact that the guns are single shot and the hunter has to focus and make the first shot count, which is great way to start a kid.  The guns are accurate and very reasonable priced.

Remington makes the “Buck Hammer” slug in a low-recoil version in 20 ga. that still travels at 1250 fps in a 2 3/4”, 1 ounce load. My 9 year old had no reservations about pulling the trigger on his mossberg 500 with this load. Extra bit of advice…Have your Son wear a good quality set of ear muffs, Not ear plugs, when sighting in. The “BANG” is a huge part of a young hunter developing a “flinch”. Good luck.

My boy started out on 870 express magnum using 2 3/4 slugs.  We switched to sabots and he has no problem with them at all.  3” slugs really kicked when he started.  He now shooting a Mossberg 500.  We are going to take gun w us for the holiday and he will be practicing shooting it.  Going to try some of these Remington reduced recoil sabots that are on sale at Dunhams for 7.99 a box and a 5.00 rebate per box available through 12/31.  He has shot Hornadays and likes them.  However they are pricy but can get them on sale.  He is 13.  See if a friend has a Lead Sled to use to get him started.
