excuse my ignorance, but im not ‘from’ illinois. i am from nebraska, and i just moved here 7 yrs ago. the thing is i have never really understood the illinois laws. i know you cant use rifles for deer, but what about coyotes, foxes, racooons, and the like? is there anything at all that its legal to use a rifle?

Only a 22 LR or shotguns and check each site before doing so, as far as Illinois laws we don’t understand what they think either.

for varmint hunting, you can use whatever you want as far as rifles.  That does not include state properties, they usually don’t allow high powered rifles for anything.  But if you wanted to go coyote hunting, you can use whatever you want (except shotgun slugs).

The only time you can use slugs is during deer firearm season and you must have a open deer permit.  But coyote season is closed during deer gun season, so it really doesn’t matter.  This is one of those stupid old laws that Illinois created many years ago when you could only hunt deer with shotguns.  They thought that people would be out poaching deer with slugs and when caught they would just say they were coyote hunting.

A .17hmr will do it, but will need to be real accurate with your shots if your looking to drop one.

Some sites fact sheets state that they allow .22 rimfire for furbearers, which should open the door to .22 WMR.

Most of them say rimfire only and shotguns.  So a .17hmr will fall in that category.

I wouldn’t consider the .17hmr ideal for anything except maybe prairie dogs and target shooting.  I’ve seen quite a few coyotes escape after being hit by the .17.  My bro-in-law bought one for coyotes and ended up going back to his .270.  Should have bought a .22-250, .223, or .243.

I would imagine you could use rifles, but don’t know for sure.
