Matt, if 2 hours away is close enough, there is a place near Bunker Hill, Il. that does the beetle cleaned skull mounts. www.fleshandbonestaxidermy.com

Use caution.  “Nice” and “reasonable” don’t usually go together.  It would all depend on how you define each of those words.

Just because someone uses beetles to clean the skull doesn’t mean they know how to do the really important steps….degreasing and whitening.

Defined as
Nice - It looks to be as of quality, not containing brain, tissue, eyeballs or other fun stuff that will later stink, leaving a nice pure white trophy to enjoy for decades

Reasonable - Costing appropriately for what something should cost that sat in a hot box letting bugs eat on it then rinsing in a big tank of solution…...i.e. not paying $350 for a skull mount with I can get a head mount for $450,  Thinking $125-$165 ish…...... I’m not paying $250, i’ve seen the process, it’s not that hard and it’s not rocket science, just wanting someone affordable, honest and of quality, I know this is super rare in the taxidermy industry, but they are out there…..

Thanks BlackpowderHunter, I’ll check that out, a pretty good drive from here but may be the best offer…........I get asked this question monthly if not more and most folks feedback is this, I’d spend $100-$150 on a Euro mount if it was real nice, but not more than that, so that is the parameters of the question i’m passing along

thanks for all your help

You are right, it’s definitely not “hard” to do.  But there are guys cleaning skulls in every town these days, and very few of them take the time to do it right.  And believe me, there is definitely more to it than just throwing it in a box of bugs and then rinsing it in a solution.

But my definition of quality may very well be different than yours.  Many guys don’t want them whitened at all…..and are happy.  Some like them somewhat whitened, and are okay with some staining or grease spots.  And if that’s the case, you won’t have to look too far to find someone capable.  Personally, I like mine thoroughly whitened and degreased, with minimal to non-existent staining that requires cover up.

The “honest” part, may be harder to come by.  After 19yrs in the taxidermy industry I have seen my fair share of scum bags come and go.

I wish I could help you with your original question.  But the honest truth is that I don’t know anyone in that part of the state that fits your parameters.  I know LOTS of taxidermists around the state.  Typically, the farther north you go, the higher the prices are.  For instance, I get $100 for a whitetail (cleaned and whitened) with a custom hanger included, but no panel.  My skulls are above average in quality.  But my friends farther north who produce similar quality are getting $150-$200 for the same thing without a hanger.

If I could point you to someone, I absolutely would.
