I hunted opening day at a public site. That’s all I really need to say but this is what my brother and I saw. An area of thick brush weed whacked and three bait piles. Come on people its public. I was dumbfounded. You could actually see where they backed up their truck to through the weeds. Of course I called he DNR. We saw two deer all day nothing close

I believe it was P.T. Barnum who said, “No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of people.”

Saw the same thing at Wayne Fitzgerell State Park back around 2010.  About a half dozen piles of corn covered over in oats.  Lots of idiots or out of staters that don’t know the regs.

I’ve hunted public ground for years and it’s unbelievable sometimes.  It’s not even worth getting out of bed some days.  It’s good entertainment for sure but frustrating as well.
Cooler temps will run off most of the tards but by the time winter hits they’re almost all gone.

NonResident hunters are notorious for doing that from the experiences I’ve had.

I’ve heard this several times. “Smoking in my stand don’t bother the deer, it’s just smoke”

Used to be some guy that would blow his grunt call all the way to his stand in the dark at an old spot I hunted.  Said when it got light there would be deer under him   I never did see him drag one out though.  Too picky I guess

Yes. Yes they are that dumb! I could write a book called “Idiots trying to outsmart poor dumb critters”. It would be how-not-to book. They re almost dangerous at times.

You guys will love this!  On a evening hunt several years ago while in the stand I could hear what sounded like a herd of deer moving thru the woods on the adjoining property.  After several minutes it stopped and nothing appeared.  I would say 15 minutes went by than rattling started to occur.  I am now telling myself o.k. someone just walked in and started their evening hunt.  It’s late October so some of the foilage is still on so now I’m looking thru my binos to find the source.  Once located it I almost fell out of the tree laughing.  There were 2 hunters sitting together on the ground.  One was rattling and the other had the bow.  The hunter rattling had a cigarette in his mouth smoking.  They were both dressed in camo with the the circle scent wafers that have the natural earth smell made by HS scents attached to their hats.  I guess this was supposed to off set the smoke.  LOL.  Needless to say they were there about one hour than walked back out.

I have had a neighbor sit about 75 yards behind me in his tree stand (right on the property line) and continually pop open beer cans. Apparently they were shook on his way to the stand because other than hearing the sound of the can opening you could hear the beer hitting the leaves when it over flowed and then the empty cans hitting the ground after he was done with them. Of course after you have had a couple of beers you need to pee, which he just stood up and peed off his stand. He had no idea I was in my stand since I was there a lot longer before he was there. Needless to say after seeing him pee I got down and went home, next day I moved my stand.

wow thats nuts! Peeing from the stand is something i use to be strongly against, but ive had to do it a few times including yesterday as i forgot my bottle, about an hour later 3 does walked in and i was able to shoot one…so i dont know how much it really matters, but the pop of a top and all that movement and racket is pretty ridiculous…

I have peed in scrapes and it only makes them more active.  They smell the testosterone.  Would not do it with the morning strong coffee urine.

Guess I’m dumb too.  I’ve been peeing in scrapes for a few years now.  I’d heard it worked, so I created my own mock scrape close to where we park at the property so I could freshen it often…..and hung a camera on it.  The first year I made it, it was one of the most active scrapes on the property, including visits from what was the oldest buck on the place that I knew of.  Since then, I have changed my attitude about peeing out of the tree.  In my opinion, the worst part about doing that is the noise of it hitting the leaves.

Got pics of a coon hound crapping in a scrape one night last year, and a buck visiting it the next morning.  I personally have come to believe that we tend to make our selves think that animals rationalize the same ways we do.  But in reality, they don’t.  It’s in our nature to place human-like qualities and emotions on to other living creatures.  But they don’t possess those attributes nearly to the degree that many of us want to believe.

I don’t smoke or drink, so I can’t speak to the way deer would react to those smells.  But I know if they are downwind enough to smell that….they will smell you too.  And I know from my experience that they really don’t react negatively to human urine.  (At least not mine or my 6yr olds).

Now, if I could just figure out how to walk to and from my stand without leaving any ground scent….....
