Save a slick head , save the states herd. One year won’t kill you but it could kill the herd. Shoot a coyote in the does or button bucks , or heaven forbid a buck that has shed his horns place. I am out , I killed one deer this year (archery) and just observed during shotgun season. It was fun just to see what they did and not put the brown down. Would have killed a yote but didn’t see any. Just say no to the late winter season that could have terrible repercussions on the deer and hunting next year and longer….Thanks and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!. God Bless.

Fortunately the counties I hunt in southern Illinois are closed to the LWS.  I was reading in the 2012-2013 deer harvest statistics that nearly 23% of all deer killed in the LWS are bucks.  Just another reason to eliminate the season next year all together.  The goal of the season is to shoot does to control the population growth but yet 1 in 4 deer shot are bucks.

I’m in but that’s no big change for me, I’ve never hunted it even though it’s always been open in my county. It’s completely irresponsible of the Dnr to have ever started this season. Zero good reasons for it. Obviously the hunters can do an effective job at lowering the deer numbers without another season. We’ve got some real winners who think they need to shoot more than 2 deer per year. Any more than that is wasteful and unnecessary. Usually these killers end up making themselves feel better about it by donating the meat or giving it to someone who needs food. Give them cash, gift cards or meat from the grocery store instead there smart guy. Yep if your one of these reckless hunters who need to kill more than 2 deer per year, you will have all kinds if excuses but they mean nothing. Grow up! If u really need to fulfill the need to thrill kill that many of this type show, kill a coyote and grow up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hung it up back in mid November. Worst season ever. I hope people will show some restraint and give the deer a rest in late season. It is important to the future of the herd. Eat the tag it’s not that big a deal!

I’ve been in for a few years now.  Selfish reasons.  I wanted to grow the herd in my little place on Earth.  I think more hunters will sit it out this year than in previous years…I hope so anyway.

No late slaguther season for me. I went two days second shotgun, just to get out of the house. Other than that I haven’t hunted since arrowing my second buck Nov. 18th. I don’t have the urge to shoot any impregnated does. Have a friend of mine who’s a newby, gonna show him the ropes and hunt with him the rest of bow season since I’m off Dec. 21-Jan. 6th. Other than that I’m pretty much done with deer for the year, gonna hit some conservation areas for pheasants and do a little rabbit hunting with my old man. After all that, hard to believe, but it’ll be time to start gearing up for fishing season which will be about a month and half later. Cooling lake opens in March, man this hunting season flew by!

My farm is Shutdown - but I have 2 neighbors who I know will be out in full force, they just dont care, if you give them the opportunity they are going to kill deer and I think there is more hunters with that attitude than those who will show restraint.

That is awesome Bigpond. I hope the deer figure that out quick and use it for refuge, so the neighbors are watching nothing but time pass. Mine is also shut off and the only hunting around me now is to the North about a mile. All we can do is hope Mother Nature takes care of, and corrects mans greed and mistakes.

I’m in agreement on the doe season, and I won’t be participating. But this comment ^^^^^^^is just plain stupid! If you kill more than two deer a year you are a “thrill killer”.......you should instead go “kill a coyote and grow up”. Killing an animal that you don’t eat isn’t “thrill killing”?

Oh…but wait….I’ll use your logic on this topic…..Yep if your one of these reckless hunters who kills animals you don’t eat you will have all kinds of excuses but they mean nothing. Grow up!

Your right big T, my comment is a bit contradicting.  I guess what I meant by it is, if you feel the urge to hunt something after you have already harvested at least 2 deer this year, please make it a coyote rather than a doe.  I still stand by MY opinion, even if you think its “just plain stupid”, that it is completely unnecessary for any hunter to need to harvest more than 2 deer per year.  Do you agree? I also believe that a lot of hunters who kill more than 2 deer a year dont actually kill this many deer with the intention of putting the meat in their own freezer, but kill first and then figure out what they are going to do with it, whether it be giving it to someone they know or donating it.

Guys listen to this.  I went out yesterday and pulled my card from one of my trail cams.  I have this camera set up on 4 acres of beans that we planted for the deer.  The last time I checked this camera was right before the first gun season.  I had a couple of decent bucks on it and some does around the week before gun season.  Since the gun season I had 4 pictures of deer and a few pictures of coyotes.  It is horrible there should be deer piling in from all over to get those beans.  There wasn’t one deer killed in this area this whole hunting season by my group or the neighboring properties we just didn’t have any good fortune.  I talked to the neighbor to the north who has cattle and checks them every night.  He told me that if he sees 2 to 5 deer a night when he’s there thats good.  When 5 years ago it was nothing to see 20.  I know that over harvesting hasn’t occurred in this area at all cause we all share info.  So EHD must be the contributing factor.  It is going to be rough next year and the years to come.  Try to refrain from killing any does for awhile if you want to have a herd to hunt in the future!!

I think you may have just worded it wrong cc.  If you want to kill something, go kill a coyote.  Be part of the solution instead of the problem is what I got out of it.  That’s my motto on this whole situation.
