Hey fellas, I am from Louisiana and enjoy reading your web site and forums since I hunt Illinois last 14 years. If your interested in another web site for hunting, we have one for La. called Bayou Bucks.com with over 9000 members. You will be surprised to see some of the bucks we take in Louisiana and most of the people on the site post daily about hunting, pics of deer by cams or killed, small game hunting, etc. Certainly not trying to take away from this Heartland website, but it does show what goes on in La. Good luck in the remainder of the season! Just trying to be a neighborly hunting enthusiast.

We hunt the Shawnee National Forest, my son went first with a friend that had a friend in Illinois with some property mixed in with the Shawnee. Following year, my son, son-n-law, & myself went, staying on this persons property, and he told us about another site by some farms that had green fields. So we checked it out, liked it, camped & hunted it in 2000 and have been back since every year. Now there may be some better areas than what we hunt?? Not sure, but we seem to always fill our combo tags each year. I know I’m being somewhat vague on actual location, but, we enjoy being by ourselves most all the time. I guess we are very selective who is with us because we don’t want someone to mess up a good thing, or cause us problems with DNR wardens or Forestry officers. We go strictly legal and abide by all regulations set by Illinois & Shawnee. We love to bow hunt, and care nothing about gun hunting up in Illinois. The Bayou Bucks web site is very informative about hunting, sharing info on different hunting areas in La. Some are very protective of their honey holes, some will truly help others out about public lands and direct others to some sweet spots. Lots of joking goes on, lot of discussions on hunting equipment, and a lot of tight knit groups, but overall the best web site for hunting I have ever been on.

I only went with a friend who used the bait & hook method a number of years back. Not something I really cared for, and no, not all of us are “Swamp People"x Hahaha. I do live in Lake Charles, which is in SW corner of La on I10. We are only about 9 miles from swamp areas, 20 miles off the Gulf of Mexico, 35 miles from Texas. There are plenty around here that gator hunt. Duck, Squirrel, Deer & fishing are the main game around here. Deer is hunted all around Lake Charles, in the marsh and woods beginning North of here. Some pretty nice deer in the marsh, but it is tough hunting. Biggest deer are in the delta region along the Mississippi River, North of Baton Rouge up to Arkansas. Property leases can unload a wallet quick unless its a heavy wallet LOL. Most of La is leased with exception of National forest and WMA’s. Since I have a camp on Toledo Bend Lake, I hunt around it. We do have a few nice deer, with some 10-12 pts 200lb bucks. But is mostly piney woods hunting. Hogs are eating us up, they everywhere. Fun to shoot with bow or gun, but they tear up your food plots, eat the fawns, compete with deer on acorn supply, just general destruction, and multiply like crazy. You definitely don’t want them to hit Illinois, they become a problem quickly. And we are like yall, maybe not as bad, but the DNR has its own agenda here also, money driven by heavy wallets/politicians, but at times they do listen to us.

By the way, I hope everyone of you made it safely through the storms you just had. Some areas looked pretty devastated.
