I am putting a small farm 40 acres all in crep and crp ground next year.  I will have 20 timber- brush 20 crp-crep hope to make it a lil better hunting, got corn and beans surrounding me from neighbors in all directions.  This lil place is a funnel farm and hope to add to the bedding areas also want to attract some Quail and Turkey your opinions are appreciated.

cuttnstrut,

20 acres of timber is good and will attract deer.  whats the other 20 acres going to be?  Prairie grasses CP-4d?  Some firebreaks of alfalfa, clover, legumes will be good for deer, turkeys, quail and pheasants.

Cuttnstrut,

sounds like you will have a good habitat plan.  Diversity is the key and you will have it with what you have listed.  Are you going to plant a short grass cover down where the trees are going to be?  There is two schools of thought on this but I like to see a short non competitive grass such as Ky bluegrass, timothy or a third grass that escapes me at the moment to help control volunteer tree competition in tree plantings.  This short grass also helps control weed competition.

Good Luck and enjoy it.
